The last night’s arrest of the rebel leader Dr. Riek Machar, if our sources are true, was a necessary and a well thought move to maintain peace and stability in South Sudan. Unlike opposition figures in other countries such as Uganda, Ethiopia, Egypt, Rwanda, and Sudan, Machar has been treated with unparalleled leniency despite his repeated attempts to wars and failed coups against President Salva Kiir for many years now.
In 2013, Machar led multiple rebellions, causing bloodshed and suffering across the country. When his first coup attempt failed in 2013, it was President Kiir who protected him and made him a way of out Juba. Again, in 2016, when he plotted another failed coup at the presidential palace, it was Kiir who ensured his safety at all costs. Even after Machar’s forces were badly defeated and left with no single soldier around him, President Kiir shielded him from notorious General Paul Malong and Akol Koor who sought to eliminate him on spot.
This level of protection for an opposition leader is nowhere in the entire continent and only found in South Sudan. Nobody loves peace than President Kiir!
Now, for the sake of peace, decisive action has been taken. No one is above the law, and any individual planning to plunge South Sudan into another war must be held accountable. The country cannot afford further instability.
President Kiir should stand firm against any pressure of the so-called international community. Western nations and their humanitarian organizations often advocate for unrealistic peace deals that undermine the government’s authority and sovereignty. The world must understand that peace cannot come at the cost of national security. South Sudan must move forward without leaders who thrive on bloodshed.
By taking such bold step to arrest Riek, President Kiir is ensuring that peace prevails, and the country remains stable. The people of South Sudan deserve a future without war, and this is a step in the right direction.
Good morning…
