Presidential Envoy Adut Salva Kiir visits inmates at Juba Prison

Presidential Envoy on Special Programs Adut Salva Kiir on Friday visited inmates at Juba Prison, where she listened to concerns from both prisoners and authorities about conditions in South Sudan’s prison system.

The Director General of the National Prison Service of South Sudan (NPSSS), Gen. Henry Akuany, said the service is currently running 92 prisons across the country, holding more than 13,000 inmates. He noted that prisons continue to face major challenges, including limited funding, poor feeding, inadequate medical services, and shortages of uniforms and transport for senior officers.

A prisoners’ representative raised additional concerns about overcrowding, disease outbreaks, lack of clean water, and long delays in trials, which keep many inmates on remand.

Addressing the inmates, Adut stressed that prisoners deserve dignity and humane treatment. She assured them that her office would remain open to receive their concerns, adding that while reforms may not come overnight, she is committed to gradual improvements.

During her tour of the men’s, women’s, and juvenile sections, she pledged to support juveniles detained over minor offences and promised to work for their release, urging them to reform and avoid future trouble.

Her visit was welcomed by both inmates and prison officials, raising hopes for reforms in the country’s correctional system.
