Did you know that In 1973, the then Zairian President, General Mobutu Sese Seko, visited Mauritania for three days. At that time, Mauritania was one of the poorest countries in Africa, with an economy that depended on fishing, farming, and sheep herding.

During the three days of discussions, President Mobutu noticed that his host, Mauritania’s President Moktar Ould Daddah, the first president of Mauritania after its independence from French colonial rule did not change his suit throughout the entire visit. Mobutu realized that his host did not have enough money to purchase elegant and expensive suits.

At the conclusion of his visit, while at the departure lounge of Nouakchott Airport, President Mobutu discreetly handed a check for 5 million US dollars to President Ould Daddah’s secretary so as not to embarrass his host. Along with the check, he included a note with the addresses of famous fashion designers in Paris, where Mobutu himself tailored his suits, hoping that President Ould Daddah would also be able to order formal suits and accessories from those houses.

After Mobutu’s departure, the secretary gave the check to President Ould Daddah, explaining that it was a gift from Mobutu for him to buy suits and clothing from Paris. President Ould Daddah immediately handed the check over to Mauritania’s Minister of Finance so that it could be deposited into the state treasury.

Later, from this gift money, Mauritania built and equipped the Higher School for Teacher Training, as the country was suffering from an acute shortage in this field due to poverty.

Five years later, in 1978, Mobutu made a stopover in Morocco while returning from the United States and stayed there for a week. When President Moktar learned of his stop in Rabat, he contacted him and invited him to visit Mauritania, even if only briefly.

On the way from the airport to the presidential palace in Nouakchott, Mobutu noticed banners in French decorating the streets that read: “Thank you Zaire ,Thank you Mobutu ,Thank you for the gift.”

Before the motorcade reached the palace, Mobutu stopped at the Teacher Training School, got out of his car, and, astonished, asked his host about the banners. He asked President Moktar: “What is this gift that the Mauritanian people are thanking me for? I have only just arrived in Nouakchott an hour ago, and I brought no gifts with me nor gave any gift.”

At that moment, President Moktar smiled and said:
“This is your valuable gift. With the five million dollars you gave me five years ago, we built this Teacher Training School, because our people are in dire need of money to fight illiteracy and poverty.”

Mobutu embraced him and said:
“If only the rest of Africa’s leaders were like you, our continent would not be suffering from illiteracy, ignorance, poverty, and underdevelopment.”

President Moktar replied: “I receive a monthly salary from the state treasury, so I am not working without pay. That gift of yours belongs to the Mauritanian people. As for my appearance and clothing, it is not right for me to wear the finest global fashions while my people suffer from poverty. With education, we can defeat these plagues and obstacles that hinder our progress.”

It was well known about President Moktar (RIP, he died in 2003) that he lived a very simple life, shunning luxury and extravagance. He lived in a modest home with only three rooms.

This true story is a gift to every thief who shouts slogans of patriotism and hides behind religion in order to steal the sustenance of the people and the dreams of the poor.

The latest UN report shouldn't shake J1

The Kiir administration should turn a deaf ear to the United Nations' latest report because it’s a mere decoy meant to distract the government from dealing with internal issues involving the West’s choice—Dr. Riek Machar.

The UN was formed to prevent another global conflict after World War II, and, more importantly, to "save succeeding generations from the scourge of war".

In 1954, 50 nations gathered to draft and sign the UN Charter, establishing the organization to maintain international peace and security, foster friendly relations among nations, promote social progress, and uphold human rights.

However, the UN is notorious for turning a blind eye to the crimes committed by the Western powers.

Haven't you read about the West’s involvements in foreign nations’ affairs? Think about what it did to Libya over Western interests.

It invaded the African nation, bombed it into ashes, and murdered its president, Muammar Gaddafi, in 2011.

Led by the United States, the Western nations also destroyed Syria (2014-present), Iraq (2003-2011), and Afghanistan (2001-2021). And the ongoing democide in the Gaza Strip.

In addition, the West has been ganging up with criminal leaders in sub-Saharan Africa to topple constitutionally recognized heads of state in order to unabatedly steal resources.

Independent probes conducted by panels comprising men and women of judicial and academic backgrounds have found George W Bush, Tony Blair (UK premier), Barack Obama, and Donald Trump guilty of crimes against peace, crimes against humanity, and genocide.

Despite the violations, the UN, which is low on legitimacy and high on bias, has obviously been acting like a scared little girl—allowing the criminal Western leaders to go scot-free.

I cannot deny nor confirm the credibility of the report, titled “Plundering a Nation: how rampant corruption unleashed a human rights crisis in South Sudan.”

However, its timing speaks volumes. With their in-law’s political life in great jeopardy—trial and heavy sentence—they released the report, which features Vice President Benjamin Bol Mel—an innocent man—as the face of the alleged grand corruption.

This, clearly, is an attempt to rile up the already angry and hungry citizens, provoking them into a possible renewed conflict, whose profiteers must be Western arms manufacturers.

Therefore, Juba, in my humble opinion, should dilute the 101-page report with f***s and urine and mail it to the UN headquarters in New York City, thanks to DHL.

And to end the cycle of political violence, Kiir must ensure that Dr. Machar goes to jail and dies of old age in confinement.

; Honestly, some women are truly heartless. I couldn’t believe what happened to a great Kakwa businessman by the Joseph Amule.

On Friday, as usual, I was coming back from hustling at Gudele market. I usually walk up to the police station to take transport to Gurei. Along the way, I saw young men and women pushing wheelbarrows, busy with their small businesses. Then suddenly, I heard someone calling my name, “Bidal, Bidal.” At first, I ignored it because I don’t usually turn back when people call my name. But when I heard it again, “Bidal, Bidal, Jena harram ta pojulu,” I turned.

I saw a man, but I couldn’t recognize him immediately. He smiled and said, Hey, how are you doing Long time!” I responded, “I’m fine, and you?” He asked if I really remembered him. At first, I didn’t. Then he said, “It’s me, Joseph Amule the one from Konyokonyo market back in 2019, next to your shop when I was working for one Sudanese man.

Immediately, my mind flashed back. I remembered him the man who was once a proud Kakwa businessman, wealthy, respected, with two shops in Konyokonyo. But my heart broke when I saw him now reduced to pushing a wheelbarrow with soap and Omo. My chest tightened with pity and pain. This was the same man who used to call us “his kids,” a social, generous married man with a beautiful Congolese wife and a home in Hai Cinema.

I wanted to ask him what happened, but my tongue was heavy. Instead, I quietly asked about his kids and his wife. His eyes grew wet with tears. He said, “It’s a long story, my brother. That’s why you see me like this.”

I felt pain in my heart. I had 7,000 in my pocket, so I gave him 5,000 and promised to return on Sunday. I even asked for his phone number, but he didn’t have a phone.

Today, around 1 p.m., I went back to find him. I took him to a tea place because I wanted to hear his story. With tears rolling down his face, he narrated:

His wife betrayed him. She took huge loans from a women’s loan group—$10,000—using his plot documents without his knowledge. She also took $5,000 cash and 10 million pounds that he had kept in the house. On top of that, she borrowed things from many people without telling him. Then, one day, she disappeared—back to Congo—leaving him with nothing but three children.

The loan company dragged him to prison, and he spent one full year behind bars. He left his business in the hands of his younger brother, who struggled to pay rent and the children’s school fees. After nine painful months in prison, some friends helped him get released. But by then, everything was gone—the business had collapsed, his health had changed, and his dignity was broken.

Now, he pushes a wheelbarrow just to survive. Yet he thanks God that he still has his children with him. As for the woman he once loved, the one he trusted with his life—she vanished, leaving behind scars too deep to heal.

When I looked at him, I could hardly believe it was the same man. His face had changed, his body weakened. From a man who once had everything—to this. My heart bled. Honestly, some women can be so wicked.

And I learned one painful truth: sometimes, trusting the wrong woman, especially marrying without knowing her roots or her true intentions, can destroy everything you built with your sweat, your blood, and your dreams.

I wished I could do more for him, but my own condition is not strong. I just gave him the little I had. But inside me, I carried a heavy sorrow—for the fall of a man who once stood tall.

Sept 9 - Ethiopia officially inaugurates Africa's largest hydroelectric dam on Tuesday, a project that will provide energy to millions of Ethiopians while deepening a rift with downstream Egypt that has unsettled the region.

Ethiopia, the continent's second most populous nation with a population of 120 million, sees the $5 billion Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) on a tributary of the River Nile as central to its ambitions for economic development.

The Otuho People of the Imatong Mountains, South Sudan

Located in the Imatong Mountains near the town of Torit in Eastern Equatoria State, South Sudan, traditional Otuho (also known as Lotuko) villages offer insight into the lifeways of one of the region’s prominent Nilotic communities.

With a population exceeding half a million, the Otuho practice agro-pastoralism, maintaining large herds of cattle, sheep, and goats, while cultivating crops such as sorghum, sesame, and groundnuts. These economic activities are often supplemented by fishing and seasonal hunting.

The Otuho adhere to a traditional belief system centered around Ajok, the supreme creator deity, regarded as both powerful and generally benevolent.

Teachers’ SSP 9.5 million salary robbed at gunpoint in Warrap

Armed robbers attacked teachers at St. Daniel Comboni Secondary School in Wunrok town, Twic County, Warrap State, and stole the teachers’ salary amounting to 9.5 million SSP, along with three smart phones and 12 pieces of clothing, last Friday night.

According to Angelo Achuan Deng, one of the teachers, the robbery occurred around 10 PM at the teachers’ residence in Wunakech village. Two teachers had left the residence to attend a traditional night dance when they were attacked.

As they ran back, the gunmen followed them, beating other teachers and taking their belongings at gunpoint.

"I'm injured on the head. A teacher called Samuel Lual was seriously hit on the head and body by a gun. A teacher who ran to a neighbor’s house wasn’t injured. Teachers who were inside other rooms were injured on their legs, and one teacher was slapped on the face. The money, smart phones, and clothes were taken,” Achuan narrated.

The stolen salaries had just been delivered that day and were supposed to be paid to the teachers the following day.

The robbers threatened the teachers with guns, preventing them from seeing their faces.

In response, Wunrok Payam Police Inspector Lt. Col. Atem Deng Atem said five people have been detained to assist in the investigation.

“We have arrested five suspects. Four men and one girl who met them on the road before the incident. We are still searching for the real suspects, and we want to find out who they are, whether the arrested individuals are the ones responsible, and who else might be involved,” Atem said.
