Government Bans Harmful Alcohol in Western Bahr el Ghazal State
The Government of Western Bahr el Ghazal State has officially banned several harmful alcoholic beverages in a bid to curb rising crime and anti-social behavior, particularly among youth.
The decision was approved on Monday, June 16th, during a joint meeting of the State Council of Ministers and the State Security Committee, following a memo presented by the Minister of Trade, Industry, and Mining.
Speaking at a press conference, State Minister of Information and Government Spokesperson, Samuel Nicola Cornelio, confirmed the Councilโs resolution to prohibit the entry, distribution, and sale of specific alcoholic drinks throughout the state, including in all commercial establishments.
โThe banned alcoholic drinks include Uganda Waragi, Royal Blue, Imperial Distilled Gin, Royal Gin, Imperial Coffee Rum, Boss Gin, Bond 7 Whisky, High & Mix, Jaguar Cocktail, Seven Seven, Flash Vodka Mix, Premium Gin, and Mix Vodka,โ Cornelio announced.
He explained that the ban is part of a broader government's initiative to combat gang-related activities and rising criminal behavior fueled by substance abuse.
โThis decision is part of our efforts to fight gang activities and criminal behavior, particularly among young people who misuse alcohol and drugs,โ he said. โWe also discussed concerns about certain drugs like Tramadol. While it is legally prescribed, its misuse and overdose pose serious risks.โ
Cornelio assured the public of the governmentโs full commitment to enforcing the new regulation, warning that violators will face punitive measures.
โPenalties include both fines and imprisonment,โ he noted. โFactories found violating the ban will be fined up to 20 million South Sudanese Pounds (SSP), wholesalers up to 15 million SSP, and retailers between 5 and 10 million SSP. Prison sentences will range from three to nine months.โ
The minister emphasized that the move is motivated by the governmentโs duty to safeguard public health and promote safety in the community.
โThis action is for the sake of a healthier and safer society,โ Cornelio concluded.
