Edo's Golden Smile is a multifaceted feminist portrait of survival and death within complex familial bonds. Spanning generations, this novel brilliantly illuminates the entanglements of civil war, displacement, military dictatorship, and colonialism—whether by European Christians or Arab Muslims from northern Sudan—and reveals their consequences, particularly for the women of South Sudan. Gaetano offers a concise exploration of motherhood, poignantly addressing the complexities of nurturing, loss, and upheaval; through her characters, she also challenges prevailing patriarchal notions of it. Thus, female desire emerges as an independent entity, separate from its association with procreation. The emphasis on scents lends the text a captivating, poetic language, enhancing the sensual experience. Influenced by the oral storytelling traditions of South Sudan, Gaetano skillfully blends realism and myth. The German translation has masterfully conveyed this narrative style, particularly highlighting its rhythm and voice. The novel reveals a striking diversity of narrative and writing styles between northern and southern Sudan, vividly demonstrating how experiences of displacement and violence transform language.
