Stop blaming village people for a business you didn't understand.

I hear this excuse a lot whenever someone fails in business several times:

“People are not supporting me.”

“The village people are working against me.”

“People don't want to see me succeed.”

Sometimes, that's simply not the problem.

You entered the business without understanding your customer, target market, pricing, competition, marketing, costs or cash flow.

You didn't properly research the market.

You didn't understand who you were selling to.

You expected customers to come automatically.

Then after a few months of poor sales, you concluded that people were against you.

Business doesn't work like that.

Some businesses take years to become profitable.

Some take five years.

Some take ten years or more.

The problem is that we have become too used to seeing people announce a business today and expect millions next week.

When the money doesn't come quickly, they quit.

Then they blame the economy.

They blame customers.

They blame competitors.

They blame the village.

Sometimes, the business simply needed better knowledge, better strategy and more time.

Before you start your next business, don't just ask:

“How much money do I need?”

Ask:

“Who is my customer?”

“What problem am I solving?”

“Why would someone buy from me?”

“How will I reach them?”

“How much does it cost me to operate?”

“How long can I survive before the business becomes profitable?”

That's how you start thinking like a business owner.

Failure doesn't always mean people are against you.

Sometimes, your business is simply teaching you what you didn't know when you started.

Learn.

Adjust.

Improve.

And give the business enough time to become something.

Having a degree doesn't mean you can stop learning

For years, many of us were taught that education ends when you graduate.

Get the degree.

Get the certificate.

Get the job.

Then you're done.

I don't believe that anymore.

The world is changing too quickly.

AI is changing jobs.

Technology is changing businesses.

New tools are appearing every day.

Skills that were valuable five years ago may not be enough today.

And this doesn't mean your degree is useless.

It means your degree is not the end of your education.

Keep learning.

Learn AI.

Learn digital skills.

Learn how businesses work.

Learn how to communicate.

Learn how to sell.

Learn how to adapt.

Because the people who will remain valuable in the next decade won't necessarily be the people with the most certificates.

They will be the people who can keep learning and apply what they learn.

Your education should never expire.

If you were born between 1992 and 2000, study says you grew up in a very different world.

There is something special about the generation born between 1992 and 2000.

We were born at a time when technology was still becoming part of everyday life.

We didn't grow up with smartphones in our hands.

We didn't have TikTok, Instagram, WhatsApp or YouTube.

Google itself was only starting to take shape around the time many of us were being born, and Facebook did not launch until 2004. YouTube followed in 2005, while WhatsApp came in 2009.

So something unusual happened to us.

We experienced both worlds.

We remember childhood before social media.

Before everyone had a smartphone.

Before every question could be answered by searching Google.

Before you could learn almost anything from YouTube.

Before people started building careers from their phones.

Then, while we were growing up, the world started changing rapidly.

Computers became common.

The internet became accessible.

Mobile phones became smarter.

Social media changed how people communicated.

YouTube changed how people consumed information.

Facebook changed how people connected.

Smartphones changed how we worked.

And now AI is changing how we create, learn and do business.

Think about how crazy that transition is.

One generation went from waiting for a TV programme to watching anything they wanted on demand.

From writing letters and notes to instant messaging.

From looking for information in books to asking AI.

From needing a physical office to running businesses from a smartphone.

From waiting for opportunities to creating opportunities online.

And perhaps that is one of the biggest advantages of our generation.

We understand the old world, but we have also learned to survive in the new one.

We know what it means to live without technology.

But we also know what technology can do.

We watched the digital world being built instead of simply being born into it.

That's why I don't think our generation should underestimate itself.

We have witnessed one of the biggest technological transformations in human history.

And we are still here to see what comes next.

AI.

Automation.

Digital businesses.

Remote work.

Online education.

The creator economy.

New forms of entrepreneurship.

The next transformation may be even bigger.

So if you were born between 1992 and 2000, you belong to a very interesting generation.

Not too old for the digital world.

Not too young to remember the world before it.

Where do you belong and what is one thing you remember from your childhood.

10 industries that will never disappear in South Sudan.

Stop chasing every new business trend.

Some industries come and go.

Some businesses become outdated.

But certain human needs will always exist.

The technology may change.
The business models may change.
The way we deliver the service may change.

But the need remains.

Here are 10 industries I believe will remain important for generations:

1. Technology & Digital Services

Technology is no longer optional.

AI, software, cybersecurity, digital platforms, cloud services, digital marketing, automation and online businesses will continue becoming part of everyday life.

The tools will change.

But technology will not disappear.

2. Food & Agriculture

People will always need to eat.

Farming, livestock, food processing, distribution, restaurants and food technology will always have a market.

3. Healthcare

People will always need healthcare.

Hospitals, pharmacies, laboratories, medical technology, healthcare services and medicine will continue evolving.

4. Education & Skills Training

People will always need to learn.

The skills we teach may change, but education will never become irrelevant.

In fact, AI is making continuous learning even more important.

5. Construction & Real Estate

People will always need somewhere to live, work, learn and do business.

Homes, offices, shops, schools, warehouses and infrastructure will always be needed.

6. Energy

Every modern economy needs energy.

Electricity, solar, batteries, fuel and future energy technologies will continue developing.

7. Transportation & Logistics

People and goods will always need to move.

The vehicles may change.

The technology may change.

But transportation and logistics will remain essential.

8. Financial Services

People will always need to manage money.

Banking, payments, savings, investment, insurance, fintech and other financial services will continue evolving.

9. Security & Protection

Individuals, businesses and governments will always need protection.

Physical security, cybersecurity, insurance and risk management will remain important.

10. Personal & Essential Services

Cleaning, repairs, beauty, clothing, sanitation, maintenance and other everyday services will always have customers.

The lesson is simple:

Don't look for an industry that will never change.

Look for an industry built around a need that will never disappear.

AI may change education.

Technology may transform agriculture.

Digital payments may transform finance.

Electric vehicles may transform transportation.

But people will still need food, health, knowledge, shelter, energy, movement, money, security and technology.

That is where I would look when thinking about building a business that can survive beyond today's trends.

Build around a permanent need, then learn to adapt with technology.

The future of South Sudan will not be built by waiting for opportunities. It will be built by young people who create them.

Today, we celebrate International Youth Day.

But for me, Youth Day should be more than a celebration.

It should also be a moment for young people to ask themselves:

What am I doing to prepare myself for the future?

The world is changing quickly.

Technology is changing how businesses operate.

Artificial intelligence is changing how people work.

Digital platforms are creating new opportunities.

And some of the jobs young people will do tomorrow may not even exist today.

This is why learning cannot stop when school ends.

A degree is valuable, but the ability to keep learning, adapting and applying new skills is becoming even more important.

You can start with what you already have.

Your smartphone.

Your internet connection.

Your time.

Learn digital skills.

Learn AI.

Learn marketing.

Learn content creation.

Learn how to build a business.

Learn how to solve real problems.

Then turn what you learn into something useful.

I believe the young people of South Sudan should not only wait to be employed.

We should also become creators of businesses, technology and opportunities.

The future will need people who can adapt.

People who can build.

People who can solve problems.

People who are willing to keep learning.

To every young person reading this today:

Don't underestimate what you can become.

Don't wait for the perfect opportunity.

Start learning. Start building. Start creating.

Happy International Youth Day to every young person in South Sudan and across Africa.

Different contexts. Common aspirations. One generation with the power to shape the future.

This is where most salary earners in Juba see their money end every year

Build a house
Buy a car
Pay rent
Pay loans
Buy food
Entertainment

You work for 12 months and your salary comes every month

But by the end of the year, you look back and realize that most of what you earned has already disappeared

This is the salary trap

The problem is not always that you earn too little

Sometimes the problem is that your entire income already has somewhere to go before you even receive it

Rent takes its share
The car takes fuel, maintenance and repairs
Food takes another portion
Loans take another
Lifestyle expenses quietly consume the rest

Meanwhile, the things that could actually change your financial future keep getting postponed

Building a house
Starting a business
Buying productive assets
Investing
Creating another source of income

If you earn a salary in Juba, don't only ask yourself how much you earn

Ask yourself

How much of what I earn is actually building my future?

Because earning a good salary is not the same as building wealth

Your salary can finance your lifestyle or it can finance your future

The choice is yours

How to start a successful business in Juba with only your Smartphone 🤳🏽

You don't always need an office, shop, expensive equipment or thousands of dollars to start a business.

Sometimes, you already have the most important tool in your hand.

Your smartphone.

If you are in Juba and you have a smartphone, internet access and the willingness to learn, there are businesses you can start today.

1. Social Media Management

There are businesses in Juba with good products but weak social media presence.

You can offer to manage their Facebook, Instagram, TikTok or WhatsApp content.

Create posts.
Take photos.
Make short videos.
Write captions.
Respond to customers.

You don't need an office.

You need to learn the skill and prove that you can help a business get attention and customers.

2. Content Creation

You can use your phone to create videos for businesses, restaurants, shops, salons, hotels, events and personal brands.

You don't need an expensive camera to start.

Your smartphone can record.

Your job is to learn what to record, how to edit it and how to tell a story that people want to watch.

One good client can lead to another.

3. Selling Services Online

You can sell your skills instead of physical products.

Graphic design.
Video editing.
Copywriting.
Digital marketing.
Virtual assistance.
AI-assisted services.
Social media services.
Online research.

Your smartphone becomes your office.

WhatsApp becomes your communication tool.

Facebook becomes your marketplace.

And your skills become your product.

But here is what many people get wrong.

Your smartphone is not the business.

It is the tool.

The business comes from what you can do with it.

I have seen people spend hours scrolling Facebook, TikTok and WhatsApp every day, yet the same phone could be helping them learn a skill, find clients, market a business or create an income.

You don't necessarily need to wait until you have $1,000 to start.

Start with what you already have.

Learn.
Practice.
Offer a service.
Find your first client.
Do excellent work.
Get a testimonial.
Find the next client.
Reinvest.

That is how small businesses grow.

If all you have today is a smartphone, don't underestimate it.

You may be holding your first business tool without even realizing it.

Nearly one million potential customers are already on Facebook in South Sudan.

If you own a business in Juba and you're still saying:

“Social media is not important for my business.”

I honestly think you need to rethink that decision.

There are nearly 1 million people reachable on Facebook in South Sudan.

And many of your potential customers are already there every single day.

They are scrolling.

They are searching for products.

They are asking for recommendations.

They are discovering businesses.

They are comparing prices.

They are watching videos.

They are making buying decisions.

The question is:

Are they seeing your business?

Because if your business has no proper Facebook presence, no consistent content, no strategy and no serious digital marketing, you may be leaving customers for your competitors.

And please don't tell me:

“I have a page.”

Having a page is not digital marketing.

Posting once every three weeks is not a strategy.

Boosting random posts is not a marketing plan.

And having 500 followers doesn't automatically mean you have customers.

Businesses need to learn how to use social media properly.

Create content.

Understand customers.

Build a brand.

Run targeted advertising.

Use AI.

Track results.

Respond to customers.

Turn attention into sales.

South Sudan is becoming more digital every day.

Your customers are already online.

The real question is whether your business is ready to meet them there.

If you're a business owner, company, organization or entrepreneur in South Sudan and you're not taking digital marketing seriously yet, 2026 is a good time to start.

Don't wait until your competitor has already built the audience you should have built.

Build your digital presence before you need it.

And if you don't know where to start, that's exactly the kind of practical digital marketing and AI skills we teach at Upkazi Academy.

Businesses don't need to be everywhere.
They need to be where their customers are.

Stop learning technology from rumours.

I keep seeing people in South Sudan say things like:

“PayPal doesn’t work.”

“Facebook Ads don’t work.”

“Online payments don’t work.”

“Monetization is impossible.”

But there is a big difference between “it doesn’t work” and “it is not supported in my country or account.”

Those are not the same thing.

I have been using PayPal since 2011, and I have been working with online platforms, digital marketing and advertising for years. I have also been running online ads and teaching these skills since my early days with CB Technologies.

And this is exactly why I tell my students:

In technology, don't learn from rumours. Learn how the system actually works.

If someone tells you something doesn't work, ask:

What exactly doesn't work?
Where is it supported?
What requirements are needed?
Is the problem the platform, the country, the account, the payment method, or the setup?

That is how you learn.

After 30 days of practical training at Upkazi Academy, my students should not leave the classroom simply repeating things they heard online.

They should understand how digital platforms, payments, advertising, AI, freelancing and online business actually work.

You don't need more rumours.

You need practical digital skills.

If you're in South Sudan and you want to understand these things properly, that's what we teach at Upkazi Academy.

Learn it. Test it. Understand it. Then make your own conclusions.
