A Respectful Appeal to Aguok Leaders and Community Members

By Peter Pakak Pakak
Awan Concerned Citizen

First and foremost, I would like to acknowledge the Aguok community of Warrap State for producing many respected leaders who have served our people with dedication and distinction. Names such as Tor Deng Mawien, Makiir G*i Thiep, Amb. Bol Wek Agoth, Bol Wek Jr., Maker Bona, and many others have earned recognition and respect across South Sudan through their leadership and contributions to society.

It is because of this respect that I write this article seeking answers, not confrontation. I believe leadership carries not only influence and prestige but also responsibility, especially when it comes to guiding younger generations and upholding community values.

For some time now, many people have expressed concern over the social media conduct of Akuac Wol, a daughter of Aguok. Her online posts have reportedly contained insults directed at individuals, respected leaders, and entire communities. Among the incidents that attracted public criticism was her reported insult of Mama Rebecca Nyandeng Garang during the mourning period following the death of Bior Asuot.

Since then, concerns have continued to grow as she has allegedly directed offensive remarks toward the people of Mading Aweil, the Apuk Giir Thiik community and its leaders, as well as other communities and individuals.

What many people are struggling to understand is why there has been little or no visible response from community leaders, elders, parents, and influential figures within Aguok. As outsiders observe these incidents, questions naturally arise about accountability and guidance within the community.

My intention is not to condemn Aguok or its leaders. Rather, I am seeking to understand whether efforts have been made behind the scenes to address these concerns and whether community leadership sees this issue as one that requires attention.

The Aguok community has long been associated with wisdom, dignity, and strong leadership. That reputation has been built over many years through the actions and sacrifices of its elders and leaders. It would be unfortunate to see that reputation questioned because of the actions of one individual.

Therefore, I respectfully ask the leaders, elders, and people of Aguok: What is being done to address these repeated incidents? What message is being sent to younger generations when insults directed at communities and respected individuals continue without public correction?

These are genuine questions being asked by many people who still hold the Aguok community and its leadership in high regard. I hope they will be received in the spirit in which they are intended, a sincere appeal for clarity, accountability, and the preservation of mutual respect among our communities.

Respect and unity remain the foundation of peaceful coexistence. It is my hope that all communities, including Aguok, will continue to uphold these values for the benefit of present and future generations

Aweil Federation Urges Unity as Online Tensions Rise

The Federation of the Aweil Community in Equatoria has renewed its appeal for peace, calm, and unity as there is growing tensions on social media.

In a statement issued on 29 May, the Federation’s Chairman, Hon. Kuol Athian Mayuen, endorsed recent calls by Amb. Garang Deng Aguer for members of the community to remain calm and avoid engaging in online disputes.

Hon. Kuol urged the people of Aweil not to respond to insults or provocative comments, stressing that such exchanges risk fueling division and misunderstanding within the community.

He further appealed to members to respect differing opinions and refrain from attacking or insulting one another, emphasizing the importance of maintaining dignity and mutual respect.

The Federation concluded by encouraging community members to respond to provocation with patience and discipline, noting that silence in the face of insults should be viewed as a commitment to peace rather than a sign of weakness.

EDITORIAL

The situation surrounding Ambassador Garang Deng Aguer, widely known as Garangdit, has drawn growing public attention in Juba, following circulating reports suggesting a possible arrest. While no official confirmation has been issued by state authorities, the developments have triggered reactions from community groups, youth structures, and political actors, underscoring the importance of timely communication and institutional clarity in moments of public uncertainty.

At present, Garang Deng Aguer remains at his residence in Juba and continues his normal community engagements. Youth groups from Aweil and other parts of Bahr el Ghazal have maintained a peaceful presence around his home, describing their actions as precautionary and motivated by concern for stability and the safety of a senior community figure.

Despite heightened public discussion, security institutions have not issued any formal statement confirming an arrest, detention, or charges. This absence of official communication has allowed speculation to persist, reinforcing the need for verified information in managing sensitive public narratives.

A Senior Community Figure and Longstanding Public Role

Garang Deng Aguer is a senior South Sudanese elder, businessman, and community leader. He began his commercial activities in the 1980s in Sudan, where he built a strong business foundation before transitioning into broader community leadership roles.

He currently serves as Chairperson of the Aweil East Community in Juba and Secretary General of the Aweil Community, an umbrella structure responsible for social coordination, cultural engagement, and welfare matters. Over the years, he has been recognized as a figure involved in mediation efforts and community cohesion initiatives.

Background: Public Advocacy and Rising Visibility

The current situation has unfolded against the backdrop of Garangdit’s consistent public advocacy for peace, restraint, and adherence to the rule of law.

Since the beginning of the year, he has repeatedly called for peaceful coexistence among communities, responsible engagement on social media, and avoidance of retaliatory responses to online insults. He has also issued written appeals encouraging Aweil social media users to cease from engaging in confrontational exchanges.

His visibility increased further following violent incidents in Khor Kaltan, near Juba, where unarmed civilians were killed and others injured by unidentified attackers. He visited the area and later made multiple visits to hospitals in Juba, where victims from Upper Nile and other conflict-affected areas were receiving treatment.

More recently, he continued to call for restraint amid rising ethnic insults and derogatory labeling circulating on social media platforms.

These actions, while framed by supporters as peace advocacy, have also placed him within a sensitive space where public statements are often interpreted through political and security lenses, but the question remains as to why.

Youth Response and Community Concerns

Following reports of a possible arrest, youth groups from Aweil and other Bahr el Ghazal communities mobilized in Juba. Their response has largely been peaceful and centered on precautionary presence around his residence, calls for official clarification, and appeals for dialogue.

Community youth structures, including the Aweil Youth Union, Aweil East Youth Union, and Twic Mayardit Youth Union, have emphasized that their actions are driven by concern over stability and the need to avoid escalation based on unverified information.

At the same time, they have called on authorities to provide clear communication to prevent speculation and maintain public confidence.

Diverging Youth Engagement Efforts

In the course of these developments, the Awan Muorkua Youth Union issued a call for a meeting involving Bahr el Ghazal youth, elders, and community leaders. The inclusion of the Ruweng Administrative Area in the invitation generated debate among stakeholders regarding representation and procedural alignment.

Several youth bodies, including the Aweil East Youth Union, Aweil Youth Union, and Twic Mayardit Youth Union, declined the invitation, citing concerns over established leadership structures and consultation procedures.

The Greater Bahr el Ghazal Youth Union later intervened, calling for revision of the invitation and removal of Ruweng from the proposed list. A revised engagement was subsequently issued, but it was also declined by multiple youth groups, reflecting broader disagreements over coordination mechanisms and legitimacy of representation.

Institutional Clarification and Public Perception

Adding another layer to the discourse, Hon. Dr. Dhieu, an influential Aweil political figure, former Minister of Investment, and founder of a peace center in Juba, issued a public clarification on a followed consultations with security institutions.

Dhieu stated that discussions were held with the National Security Service (NSS) and senior military leadership, including the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF). According to his account, these institutions indicated they had no knowledge of any planned arrest of Ambassador Garang Deng Aguer.

However, sections of the public and youth groups remain cautious, noting that similar reports in the past have often required formal written confirmation to fully resolve uncertainty. This reflects a broader challenge of trust and communication between institutions and communities during moments of heightened sensitivity.

Editorial View: The Need for Clarity and Responsible Communication

This development highlights a recurring governance and communication challenge: the gap between institutional silence and public perception. In the absence of official confirmation or denial, narratives can quickly expand, often influencing community reactions and mobilization.

At the same time, the peaceful nature of youth engagement underscores a growing preference for restraint and dialogue rather than confrontation. However, sustained uncertainty risks prolonging tension and misunderstanding.

What is needed at this stage is clear, timely, and authoritative communication from relevant institutions to either confirm or dispel circulating claims. Equally important is continued engagement between community structures and youth leadership to ensure that dialogue remains the primary channel for resolving concerns.

Conclusion

The situation involving Garang Deng Aguer remains unconfirmed at official level but highly active in public discourse. While youth responses have remained largely peaceful and focused on protection and dialogue, the absence of institutional clarity continues to shape perceptions.

Moving forward, stakeholders across all levels are encouraged to prioritize verified information, structured engagement, and calm communication to ensure that the matter does not escalate beyond manageable proportions.
