Upper Nile Governor Jacob Dollar Ruot’s iPhone photo sparks debate

A photo of Upper Nile State Governor Jacob Dollar Ruot, popularly known as “Dollar,” seated outside a grass-thatched house with what appear to be four iPhones on a table has gone viral on social media.

The image has sparked mixed reactions, with some questioning the contrast between displays of wealth and South Sudan’s economic challenges.

South Sudan remains among the poorest countries globally, with many citizens living on less than a dollar a day, according to UN reports. Critics say the image reflects inequality, while others urge caution against drawing conclusions from a single photo.
