Journalist arrested while livestreaming Custom Market fire

A journalist from South Sudan Media was arrested today evening while livestreaming the fire that swept through Custom Market, witnesses said.

In the video, the journalist is seen expressing frustration over the government’s absence at the scene and its failure to console traders who lost their businesses. Moments later, a gunshot is heard off-camera, followed by a man’s voice questioning why the journalist was livestreaming and asking whether he “started the fire” or was “sent.”

The video cuts off abruptly. Repeated attempts to reach the journalist have gone unanswered, and his whereabouts remain unknown.

The arrest comes just days after Arabic-language journalist Michael Christopher was arrested under unclear circumstances, raising fresh concerns about press freedom in South Sudan.

Throwback on 8th Jan 2025

Is Juba City Mayor aware that the aggressive expulsion of streets vendors can lead to serious demonstrations which is likely to bring down the government?

By: Ateny Wek Ateny
Juba, January 8th, 2025

The decision by the Mayor of Juba Municipality H.W Johnson Swaka to expel streets’ vendors from selling their hard earned goods on roadsides, is one of the most dangerous move a local institution could take against the people of South Sudan, particularly at this time of economic downturn.

It is absurd to stop hustlers from hustling to provide basic needs for their families in the name of organizing the city. Does Juba City Council really understands which priority they need to first do? After all what is Juba City organizing? Juba City is the worse city on earth in term of waste management — the most unorganized and not properly surveyed at the same time. It is not dirty because of vendors, but because of lack of will from host state authorities to organize the city. Dubai, one of the world’s most innovative and organized cities in the world, has street vendors. So, what is Juba city trying to do better than this?

Juba city requires number of priorities before getting to vendors. Juba city had failed to provide clean drinking water, it has not even managed to regulate disposal of garbage for 20 years since 2005. So, why bothering poor citizens who hustles for loaf of bread? The Mayor has of Juba must be informed to scrap this decision, or risk being removed from his position by the Governor of CES. Unless the governor subscribe to this unpopular decision, then he must discourage decisions that may affect the entire government.

Vendors have the history of causing popular uprisings all over the world. The Arab Springs was caused by unwise decision of the Tunisian Municipality — which culminated into collapse of many despotic Arabs’ governments. It started as an issue of organizing the city of Tunis, but badly mishandled like this one. The city council of the Tunisian Capital Tunis, on December 17th 2010 exactly 14 years ago as I write this article, started by destroying vendor’s tables, and destroyed goods and sent vendors away, in an attempt to clean the city. It backfired against Zine El Abidine Bin Ali’s government.

After destroying Markets stalls of mostly youthful vendors, the victim Tarek El- Tayeb Mohammed Bouazizi set himself ablaze after he applies kerosene on his body to accelerate his death. The protests were sparked by the self immolation of Bouazizi. Barely a month on the protests by youths, President Zine El Abidine Bin Ali fled to Saudi Arabia on January 14th 2011, marking the starts of Arab Spring. Thus, all major Arab countries in Africa with exception of Morocco changes their governments in a very mysterious way.

So, let the governor of Central Equatoria State H.E Augustino Jadalah Wani intervene to rescind this unwanted decision from the Juba City Mayor in an attempt to stop our youth from struggling to feed themselves and their families. Our working force have already more than a year without salaries, how are we expecting those vendors who are now expelled to feed themselves? The decision from the Mayor of Juba City is an incitement against President Kiir’s administration. Otherwise, the early the decision of the Mayor of Juba City is rescind, the better. We can’t afford being placed on a time bomb.

EU gives South Sudan €40 million to connect electricity from Uganda

The European Union has given €40 million in grant funding to support a project that will extend electricity from Uganda into South Sudan, EU Head of Mission Pelle Enarson said Monday after a meeting with ICT Minister Ateny Wek Ateny.

Enarson said the financing is part of the EU’s commitment to strengthening South Sudan’s energy infrastructure and improving access to reliable power.

The two also discussed the ongoing constitution-making process and the EU’s support for South Sudan’s first planned democratic elections in December 2026.

Enarson advised that the constitutional process should not be rushed or tied strictly to the election timeline, calling it a public-driven exercise that “needs time.”
