General Dominic Dim Deng (1950–2008)
Dominic Dim Deng was a distinguished South Sudanese military leader and politician who played a key role in the country's liberation struggle. Born on 1 March 1950 in Adol village, Twic County, Bahr el Ghazal (now Warrap State), he joined the Anyanya movement in 1966 at the age of 16, interrupting his education. Following the Addis Ababa Agreement of 1972, he served in the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF), rising through the ranks while secretly supporting the southern resistance.
In 1987, he left the SAF and joined the Sudan People's Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/A), where he became one of its most respected commanders. He led major military operations, served in several senior command positions, and was promoted to Lieutenant General after the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) in 2005. He also served as a member of the Southern Sudan Legislative Assembly and chaired the SPLM in Warrap State.
In 2007, General Dim was promoted to full General and appointed the first Minister of SPLA Affairs (Defence) in the Government of Southern Sudan. He was tasked with transforming the SPLA from a guerrilla movement into a professional national army.
On 2 May 2008, General Dominic Dim Deng was killed in a plane crash near Rumbek while returning from an SPLM function in Warrap State. His wife, Josephine Apieu Jenaro Aken, Dr. Justin Yak Arop, and other government and SPLA officials also died in the crash. He was buried with full military honours at Bilpam in Juba.
General Dominic Dim Deng is remembered as one of the founding commanders of the SPLA and a national hero whose leadership and dedication helped shape South Sudan's military institutions and its struggle for independence.
