Did you know the reason why South Sudanese wrestlers wrapped their waist with leopard skin during wrestling?
Well, I guess some of you might be wondering about that! 🤔
First of all, Wrestling in Mundari Land and some parts of the Dinka community is more than a sport, It's a cultural institution that celebrates strength, courage, bravery, honor and manhood.
Therefore, during wrestling matches, some wrestlers tie or wear leopards skins on their waists as a symbol of bravery, power and the spirit of a champion ✊
While the outsiders believe a lion is the king of the jungle, Some of these wrestling communities believe the lion is the true king of the jungle because of its cunning , intelligence, stealth, independence, and the hunting skills. Unlike the lion which relies on the strength of a group and pride. The leopard can survive alone and has the ability to resist and overcome challenges.
By wearing leopard skin, the wrestlers seek to embody these admired realities.
Obtaining a leopard skin is also a symbol of social status as it does not come cheaply. purchasing a leopard skin can range from 5-10 cows making it the most high valued animal skin in the wrestling communities as cattle are central to their economic status and cultural life.
The same scenario and belief can be observed from the African kings and queens wearing leopard skin in their kingdoms as well, which symbolises strength, bravery and power.
