Dr. Riek Machar is not on trial alone.
A people are on trial with him.

Yes, what is happening to him today smells like a political witch hunt.
Yes, detention without justice is wrong.
Yes, no leader deserves torture, humiliation, or ex*****on disguised as law.

But truth does not end there.

For over forty years, Dr. Riek Machar carried the hopes of the Nuer people β€”
and over forty years, those hopes were recycled, postponed, and buried with our dead.

Every time he rose, our people rose with him.
Every time he fell, our people were massacred.
And yet no system was built to protect the innocent when politics collapsed.

This is not hatred β€” this is history.

We defended one man with our lives,
but we never demanded institutions, accountability, or succession.
We became loyal to personalities, not principles.
And the cost was paid by women in IDP camps,
children without schools,
villages without clinics,
and graves without names.

Now he sits in detention,
and again the question returns β€” not whispered, but screaming:

What happens to the Nuer when one man is removed?

If his imprisonment collapses us,
then we were never a nation β€” only a following.
If his death destroys us,
then we failed to prepare our future.

This moment is painful, yes β€”
but it is also revealing.

It exposes our greatest weakness:
We never built collective leadership.
We never protected our people beyond the battlefield.
We never planned beyond the next rebellion.

Dr. Riek Machar’s trial is unjust β€”
but our self-reflection is overdue.

If we truly love him,
we must stop repeating the cycle that kills our people every time power shifts.

This is not a call to abandon him.
It is a call to outgrow dependency.

Because a people that collapses without one man
