Abyei Information and Radio Service (AIRS) and its affiliate station, Abyei FM, will suspend all broadcasting activities starting Monday, 2 June, the organization announced in a public notice on Wednesday.

The indefinite shutdown, according to management, is a result of compounded financial and operational challenges that have plagued the station for nearly a year.

โ€œSince the termination of its main funding partnership with IREX in August 2024, AIRS has operated without a fixed budget,โ€ Statement reads.

โ€œEfforts to secure alternative funding have been unsuccessful,โ€ the statement added.

AIRS is appealing to local stakeholders, the diaspora, and supporters to help sustain what it described as โ€œthe only media outlet in the region that provides the audience with credible news and life-saving information.โ€

Since taking office, U.S. President Donald Trump implemented significant changes to U.S. foreign aid policy, including cuts to USAIDโ€”the primary donor for many grassroots organizations globally, particularly in Africa, South Sudan and Sudan.

The Trump administration justified these measures by emphasizing a policy of fiscal restraint and encouraging aid recipients to pursue greater self-reliance.

President Trump frequently stated that American taxpayer money should not be used to fund foreign programs indefinitely, urging recipient countries and organizations to develop sustainable, independent systems.
