Gola Boyoi Gola, Chief Administrator of the Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA), accompanied by Hon. David Ngiro, Chairperson of the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission, held a crucial meeting today with the Deputy Country Representative of UNICEF. The discussion focused on the current status of UNICEF’s pulling out from GPAA and how they will continue to support the vulnerable community especially the children.
During the meeting, H.E Gola Boyoi Gola expressed his appreciation for UNICEF’s numerous projects and initiatives in education, child protection, nutrition, and health—programs that have significantly benefited the communities of GPAA during his first term in office. He acknowledged the critical role UNICEF has played in advancing the well-being of children and vulnerable populations across the area.
However, the Chief Administrator also raised concerns upon hearing reports that UNICEF plans to close its offices. Recognizing the importance of UNICEF’s presence and its impact on the community, he inquired about the reasons behind this decision and emphasized the need to address any issues that may be resolvable. H.E Gola Boyoi Gola expressed his commitment to maintaining strong collaboration and urged UNICEF to consider continued support, especially in areas such as education infrastructure.
Deputy Representative Mr. Obia Achieng, speaking on behalf of the UNICEF Country Representative, reaffirmed the strong and positive relationship between UNICEF and the GPAA government. He noted that UNICEF has not encountered any issues or complaints from the area and highlighted ongoing discussions with Deputy Chief Administrator Hon. John Abulla. Mr. Achieng explained that although UNICEF is adjusting its operational footprint, its commitment to the GPAA remains firm, with plans to continue activities through increased funding and support, even if not through a physical presence.
H.E Gola Boyoi Gola requested UNICEF’s support in constructing a boarding school in Pibor to facilitate the accommodation of teachers and improve access to quality education as away to build the next generation and mitigate the high rates of youth engaging in criminal activities. He expressed confidence that continued collaboration will help address community needs and ensure sustainable development in GPAA.
