Anywaa leaders have been flooding the media with reports of a "foreign invasion" by the SPLM-IO. This is a strategic lie. They are attempting to frame a local, ethnic conflict which they ignited as a cross-border war to trick the Federal Government into supporting their failed military adventures.

The violence did not start with the death of the Police Chief; it started with pre-meditated murders that these leaders worked tirelessly to hide from the authorities.

In Gambella town, a Nuer bank manager was targeted and killed. This was not a "clash"; it was a targeted assassination of a professional civilian to terrorize an entire community.

On the road from Lare to Gambella, Anywaa militias ambushed two ambulances. Attacking medical vehicles carrying the sick and wounded is a violation of all human decency and international law.

Why did these leaders remain silent about these murders for weeks? Because they believed they were winning. They only started "exposing" the conflict and blaming the SPLM-IO once the Nuer community organized a defense and pushed them back. You cannot hide your crimes while you are the aggressor and then cry like a victim the moment you face a response.

The accusation against the SPLM-IO is a political smokescreen.
The SPLM-IO is a South Sudanese entity with no presence in these local street fights.
By naming them, Anywaa leaders hope to hide the fact that the killers were local militias mobilized by his own rhetoric.

Using the name of a foreign rebel group to justify a local defeat is the ultimate sign of a leader who has lost his grip on reality and his integrity.

We call on the Federal Government and the Regional Authorities to look past the fake news. Do not start the investigation with the response; start it with the murder of the bank manager and the ambush of the ambulances. The blood in Gambella was spilled by those who thought they could kill with impunity and then hide behind a South Sudanese political name.
