Rare red Moon lights up South Sudanās sky during lunar eclipse
A spectacular lunar eclipse dazzled the night skies across South Sudan on the evening of Sunday, September 7, 2025, as the moon turned a striking shade of red. The rare celestial event, often referred to as a āBlood Moon,ā drew the attention of skywatchers across the country who gathered outside their homes to witness the breathtaking sight.
The eclipse began shortly after sunset, with the earthās shadow gradually covering the moon before it took on its deep crimson glow. For several hours, South Sudanese communities from Juba to Aweil, Bor, Wau, and beyond looked up in awe as the night sky showcased one of natureās most fascinating wonders.
Scientists explain that the red color occurs when sunlight passes through the Earthās atmosphere, scattering blue light and bending the remaining red light onto the moonās surface. While a normal full moon appears bright white, the eclipse transforms it into a dim, reddish orb that has long inspired myths and cultural interpretations around the world.
Cultural elders in different parts of the country recalled traditional beliefs tied to eclipses, with some viewing it as a sign of renewal, while others described it as a powerful reminder of natureās mysteries.
