Government confirms 71 killed in Rumbek Clashes, deploys Joint Security Forces
The Government of South Sudan says at least 71 people were reportedly killed in violent clashes involving armed civilians in Rumbek Town, Lakes State, early Friday morning.
In a press statement issued on Friday, the government said the clashes began at approximately 4:00 a.m., resulting in significant loss of life. However, the exact number of fatalities and injuries remains unverified.
The statement confirmed that four soldiers, including a captain and three non-commissioned officers (NCOs), were among those killed.
The government said it had deployed joint security forces comprising the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF), the National Security Service (NSS), and the South Sudan National Police Service (SSNPS) to contain the situation.
According to the statement, Rumbek Town is now under government security control, with efforts underway to restore normalcy and protect civilians and their property.
The government also reported that four armed civilians had been arrested and four fi****ms recovered. The suspects and weapons are reportedly in the custody of the relevant security authorities for further investigation and possible legal action.
The government condemned the violence and called on communities in Lakes State to remain calm, exercise restraint, and avoid retaliatory attacks that could further escalate tensions.
It also extended condolences to the families of those killed and wished the injured a speedy recovery, adding that further updates would be provided as verified information becomes available.
The statement was issued by the Office of the Caretaker Minister of Information, Communication Technology and Postal Services.
