14 Detainees Released in Wau Following Presidential Amnesty

At least 14 detainees have been released from the SSPDF 5th Infantry Division in Wau following an amnesty order issued by President Salva Kiir Mayardit.

The detainees were released on Thursday morning and handed over to the Governor of Western Bahr el Ghazal State, Maj. Gen. Sharif Daniel Sharif, at the Grinty Garrison.

They are expected to be transferred to their respective military units following their release.

Speaking to the media at the garrison, the State Advisor on Peace and Security, Thomas Mangu Julu, said all the released detainees had been promoted.

Julu urged them to immediately report to their respective units, where they could be assigned for possible deployment.

The release is part of the implementation of the presidential amnesty order.

10 September 2026, Nairobi - Today, the Hon. Amb. Agnes Adlino Orifa Oswaha, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation accompanied by Hon. Pia Phillip Michael, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Peace Building and Dr. Khamis Fredrick, representing the Ministry of Interior of the Republic of South Sudan participated in the Regional Intergovernmental Experts' Meeting on the Validation of the Resilient Trade and Socio-Economic Integration as a Pathway to Peace in the Great Lakes Region (REST-GLR) hosted by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resilience Hub for Africa.

The programme under the initiative: Resilient Trade and Socio-Economic Integration as a Pathway to Peace in the Great Lakes Region (REST-GLR) is a transformative initiative focused on shifting the narrative of borderlands namely between nine partner states including: Angola, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia.

The programme intends to champion economic inclusion and shared markets as the ultimate foundation for long-term stability and resilience, while also supporting the broader United Nations Strategy and Plan of Action for the Great Lakes Region.

The Keynote Speaker Ms. Regina Ombam, Principal Secretary, State Department for Trade, Republic of Kenya, graced the occasion. In attendance were government officials, international partners including UNDP Resident Representative to South Sudan Dr. Mohamed Abchir, and major regional bodies: East African Community (EAC) representatives, H.E. Chileshe Mpundu Kapwepwe, Secretary-General, (represented by Mr. Khutula Sibanda, Chief, Resource Mobilisation & International Cooperation) of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), Dr. Emma Theresa Liwenga, Executive Director, Lake Tanganyika Authority, H.E. Huang Xia, the UN Special Envoy of the Secretary General for the Great Lakes Region, Dr. Mubita Luwabelwa, Executive Secretary International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR).

Cairo, September 10, 2026 - The Minister of Youth and Sports of the Republic of South Sudan, Hon. Atong Kuol Manyang Juuk, held a meeting with Egypt’s Minister of Youth and Sports, Dr. Jawhar Nabil in Cairo, to discuss opportunities for strengthening bilateral cooperation between the two countries in the fields of youth empowerment and sports development.

The meeting was attended by Ambassador Hani Salah, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Egyptians Abroad for Sudan and Ambassador Kuol Nyok Arop, South Sudan head of mission in the Arab Republic of Egypt, alongside senior officials from both ministries and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Discussions focused on opportunities to exchange expertise and experiences, utilize available capacities, and implement joint programs and activities aimed at advancing youth and sports development in both countries.

Minister Atong Kuol Manyang Juuk welcomed closer cooperation with Egypt and conveyed the greetings of the Government and people of South Sudan to the Government and people of Egypt. She reaffirmed South Sudan’s appreciation for the strong and longstanding relations between the two countries and expressed her country’s commitment to strengthening cooperation while benefiting from Egypt’s expertise and experience in youth and sports development.

Minister Jawhar Nabil emphasized that sports are a powerful tool of soft diplomacy, capable of bringing peoples closer together while creating new avenues for communication, partnership, and cooperation. He noted that collaboration in the youth and sports sectors can provide a strong foundation for strengthening broader relations between Egypt and South Sudan.

The two sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepen coordination, expand the exchange of expertise, and develop joint youth and sports programs, opening new opportunities for cooperation between the young people and athletes of South Sudan and Egypt.

In conclusion of the meeting, the two sides agreed to work toward a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen cooperation in youth and sports. The proposed framework will focus on the exchange of expertise and experiences, capacity building, joint youth and sports programs, training opportunities, and other areas of mutual interest
