Residents of Madiny-wuny, Achot, Arop-thith, and Akoch in Gogrial Payam, Gogrial West County of Warrap State have issued a strong and unified appeal to the government and development partners regarding a worsening water crisis that continues to endanger lives and livelihoods.
Since the independence of South Sudan, these riverine communities report that they have remained without reliable access to clean and safe drinking water. Despite their proximity to natural water sources, the absence of adequate water treatment and supply systems has forced residents to depend on unsafe water, exposing them to waterborne diseases and persistent hardship.
The situation has been described as critical, with women and children bearing the burden of traveling long distances in search of water that is often unfit for human consumption. This ongoing scarcity has significantly impacted public health, economic activities, and the overall wellbeing of the affected populations.
In response, the communities are calling on the Government of Warrap State and key partners, including the ASK Foundation, to take immediate and decisive action. They are advocating for the installation of hand pumps, drilling of boreholes, and the development of sustainable water infrastructure to ensure consistent access to safe drinking water.
The residents underscore that access to clean water is a fundamental human right vital for preserving life, dignity, and social stability. They warn that failure to address the crisis promptly may lead to a deepening humanitarian emergency in the village .
As one resident aptly stated, โWe need clean water now not tomorrow. Our lives depend on it.
