A prosecution witness has told the special court in Juba that suspended First Vice-president Dr. Riek Machar is linked to the Nasir killings through evidence of “command responsibility”.

The claim was made after defence lawyers repeatedly demanded direct evidence connecting Machar to the deaths of more than 200 government soldiers in the town of Nasir in March 2025.

UN Spokesman Stephane Dujarric, on Tuesday, during a press briefing in New York, said the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has called for urgent action to safeguard children and essential services.

He said the UN has been specifically highlighting the plight of children as a result of the war and that UNICEF estimates that 10 million people have been displaced in Sudan, half of whom are children.

“This is the highest level of child displacement in the world,” he stated. “UNICEF reports that children trapped in besieged and hard-to-reach areas, including in the Darfur and Kordofan regions, are especially vulnerable, where access to food, water, and medical supplies remains practically cut off.”

“Newly displaced children arrive exhausted, dehydrated, and in urgent need of protection, nutrition, and medical support,” he added.

According to Dujarric, UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell, who is currently in Sudan, met with Government officials in Port Sudan, as well as with displaced women and children.

“As is too often the case, she underscored, women and girls are bearing the brunt of the crisis, including horrific levels of sexual violence. They need protection, services, and global solidarity,” he said. “As you well know, famine has been declared in parts of Darfur and Kordofan regions, with the risk of that famine spreading. Despite severe access constraints, UNICEF is delivering assistance across the country wherever it can.”

A military transporter identified as a Russian-made Il-76 cargo plane crashed in Port Sudan on Tuesday, killing all members of its crew on board, AFP reported.

“The Il-76 aircraft went down as it attempted to land at the Osman Digna Airbase in the Red Sea port city of Port Sudan after experiencing a technical malfunction,” the news agency quoted a source as saying on condition of anonymity.

He confirmed that “all members of the crew were killed in the air crash,” AFP said, without disclosing how many personnel were on board.

Western Equatoria State parliamentarians have renewed calls for a new law that will punish men who impregnate women—especially girls—and then abandon them, amid growing reports of neglect, exploitation, and gender-based violence across the state.

State Legislative Assembly Speaker Ann Tuna Richard told Radio Tamazuj that Western Equatoria was facing a dangerous increase in cases of girls being lured into relationships, impregnated, and left without support. She said many women were also raising children alone after men abandoned them.

“There are many women now raising children alone,” she said. “A man may impregnate a woman and then behave as if he has no duty. This bill will hold such men accountable.”

The proposed legislation, which has already passed its first reading, introduces a minimum five-year jail sentence for men who refuse to support their pregnant partners or their children. It also allows a child to be registered under the mother’s family name when the father denies responsibility.

Speaker Tuna said the state continues to record cases where girls were impregnated by boys or older men who later fled, young mothers dropped out of school permanently, and women were forced into poverty because their partners refused to help them. Some men, she went on, took up multiple girlfriends despite lacking the means to support even one family.

“Girls are dropping out of school every year due to unplanned pregnancies,” she said. “Many never return, and their lives and dreams are cut short.”

She added that the burden on women contributed to early deaths, poor health, and deepening poverty across communities.

Edmund Yakani, a prominent civil society activist, called on South Sudan’s human rights defenders to uphold professionalism and reject ethnic divisions as he hands over the leadership role on Friday.

Speaking at the fourth Human Rights Defenders Award ceremony in Juba on Tuesday, Yakani warned that such honors should not fuel hate or personal gain. He said the event aimed to recognize collective dedication, not elevate individuals.

At least five SPLM-IO members who support Gabriel Magok Bol, the former SPLM/A-IO appointed military commissioner of Unity State’s Panyijiar County, were reportedly arrested last week by the newly appointed commissioner, Stephen G*i.

G*i was appointed by acting SPLM/A-IO chairperson Oyet Nathaniel last month. However, the changes led to tensions with Magok rejecting his removal. The standoff led to violent clashes between supporters of the two officials.

Former commissioner Magok told Radio Tamzaju on Monay that five of his supporters were arrested by the new SPLM/A-IO commissioner, G*i.
