The World Food Programme (WFP) said on Monday that its teams are on the ground delivering humanitarian assistance to new arrivals in Renk, South Sudan, where more than 80,000 people have crossed the border since the beginning of December due to intensified fighting in Sudan.

The ongoing conflict in Sudan has led to a massive displacement crisis, forcing millions of people to flee the country. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), over 3 million people have fled Sudan to neighboring countries since the conflict began in April 2023. This makes it one of the fastest-growing displacement crises in the world.

Nigeria’s Justice Minister Lateef Fagbemi Friday said the West African nation and the United States have signed an agreement to repatriate approximately $52.88 million in assets forfeited by the former Petroleum Resources Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke and her associates.

Through a statement released to the media Fagbemi said the agreement "concretizes the repatriation of approximately $52.88 million arising from the forfeiture of the Galactica assets,” linked to Alison-Madueke and her associates.

The funds will be used to support rural electrification projects through the World Bank, with $50 million allocated to increasing access to renewable energy, Fagbemi said.

The remaining $2.88 million will be disbursed as a grant by Nigeria to the International Institute for Justice to support counter-terrorism capacity across Africa, he said.

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has banned the Doha-based Al Jazeera Media Network over its interview with Bertrand Bisimwa, the leader of M23, a violent rebel group that has seized territory in the country’s east in recent days.

According to Congolese government spokesperson Patrick Muyaya, authorities revoked press credentials of Qatar’s broadcaster in Congo, saying the network had interviewed the head of a “terror organization without proper accreditation.”

TRUMP TO INVADE GREENLAND AND CANADA

U.S President-elect Donald Trump revealed on Jan. 7 that he would not rule out using military force to annex Greenland.

The ice-covered Danish territory, considered the largest island in the world, has long been a hot topic among strategists in Washington and elsewhere — despite Copenhagen’s insistence it is not for sale — due to its location along vital shipping routes and the presence of key raw materials that are rarely found anywhere else.
