Governor Lobong Welcomes Monyiemiji Tournament Finalists to Torit, Calls for Unity Through Football
TORIT, Eastern Equatoria State – August 7, 2026 — Eastern Equatoria State Governor Gen. Louis Lobong Lojore has welcomed teams, players, officials and supporters arriving in Torit for the Monyiemiji Football Tournament final, urging South Sudanese to keep politics out of sports and embrace football as a tool for peace and unity.
Speaking on Friday, Governor Lobong recalled that when he attended the opening of the tournament in Juba, he requested that the final be staged in Torit. He said the appeal was driven not by political or economic interests, but by his desire to bring the spirit of peace, unity and togetherness displayed during the tournament back to Eastern Equatoria.
The Governor said Torit was the rightful place for the tournament's climax, encouraging players and supporters to return home and showcase their talents before their families and communities.
"Home will always be home," Lobong said, adding that the tournament offers an opportunity for local communities to witness and celebrate the talents of their youth.
He stressed that sports should remain free from political influence, saying football is meant to unite people regardless of their backgrounds.
"Football is for peace and unity. Let us disown politics when it comes to social activities, because such activities should be meant for uniting our people," he said.
Governor Lobong noted that hosting the Monyiemiji final in Torit would strengthen social cohesion, promote peaceful coexistence and allow communities from across Eastern Equatoria to celebrate together through sport.
He concluded by welcoming all participating teams, match officials and supporters to Torit and wished them a successful, peaceful and memorable tournament.
