Ateny Wek condemns Aleu Ayieny's claims on succession, defends VP Bol Mel

In a surprising turn of political commentary, Ateny Wek Ateny, the former Press Secretary in the Office of the President has publicly rebuked the former Governor of Warrap, Aleu Ayieny Aleu for making what he called “misplaced” remarks on presidential succession.

The rebuke came in response to a statement made by Aleu during Friday’s gathering at the residence of the newly appointed Governor of Warrap State, Amb. Bol Wek Agoth. In the speech, Aleu raised questions about the Red Army’s age and subtly implied that Dr. Benjamin Bol Mel, Vice President for Economic Cluster and the first Deputy Chairperson of the ruling party, SPLM harbors presidential ambitions, a suggestion Ateny swiftly dismissed as unfounded and inflammatory.

“I disagree with Gen. Aleu’s statement regarding the issue of the members of the Red Army at 55 years of age, and the allegations that Dr. Benjamin Bol Mel had the ambition to succeed President Salva Kiir,” Ateny wrote.

At the heart of Ateny's argument is a defense of the Red Army generation, the cohort of child soldiers groomed during the liberation struggle, many of whom have since emerged as some of the country’s most educated and capable leaders.

“Now, some of the best educated South Sudanese class comes from Lost Boys and Lost Girls, they were meant to be future leaders. There should be no crime today for them to aspire or even vie for the highest position in the land.” Ateny said.

Ateny further rejected speculation that President Kiir is grooming Bol Mel as his successor, stating that such claims are either the work of sycophants trying to gain favor or detractors attempting to sow division between the President and Bol Mel.

“Dr. Benjamin Bol Mel has never said it anywhere, privately or publicly, that he is the potential successor of President Kiir,” Ateny clarified.
