4 arrested after Shirkat gang r*pe sparks public outrage
Four suspects have been arrested in connection with the gang r*pe of a schoolgirl in Shirkat, an incident that has provoked widespread public anger and condemnation.
The victim’s father, Col. Abraham Deng Moses, an SSPDF officer, has called on the authorities to speed up the judicial process and ensure that justice is served without delay.
Speaking to Hot in Juba at Juba Teaching Hospital on Thursday, Col. Abraham said his 16 year old daughter, born in 2009 and currently in Senior One, was sent to the market on Thursday last week when she was cornered by panga-wielding gang members, kidnapped, and taken to an abandoned house, where the assault occurred.
Disturbingly, the suspects recorded the attack on video as they took turns assaulting her. The footage, seen by Hot in Juba, shows at least six young men involved in the act.
“This is a tragic and painful experience,” he said. “But I advise the public against resorting to violence. I have faith in the police and the judiciary to deliver justice.”
Police confirmed that four suspects aged between 19 and 21 have been apprehended and are expected to appear in court soon. Four others remain at large, with police launching a manhunt to track them down.
Col. Abraham urged parents and local authorities to do more to protect girls and prevent youth from turning to crime. “Many of these boys are abusing drugs called ‘ice’ and joining gangs. Parents must raise their children better and guide them away from these destructive paths,” he added.
Renowned lawyer Josephine Adhet, who accompanied the victim to hospital and filed the initial police complaint, said she will follow the case closely. “The law will take its course,” she said.
Medical examination results confirmed that she is physically stable but deeply traumatised, according to doctors at Juba Teaching Hospital.
