Zain Network Expansion in Wunlit Payam, Jalwau Community – Tonj East County

The Zain telecommunications company has initiated the setup of its mobile network infrastructure in Wunlit Payam, located within the Jalwau community of Tonj East County, Warrap State, South Sudan. This development marks a significant milestone in improving connectivity in one of the more remote regions of the country.

Currently, groundwork activities are underway, with metal structures for the network tower already being installed. This signals the early phase of the tower construction, which will eventually support 2G/3G/4G services, depending on the equipment and coverage plan implemented.

Local residents and community leaders have welcomed the move, anticipating improved access to communication, mobile banking, and digital services once the network becomes fully operational. The presence of Zain in the area is expected to enhance business, education, and emergency response capabilities in a region that has long struggled with limited connectivity.

More updates will follow as construction progresses and network activation nears completion.

Revoked Undersecretary Martin Mabior is Dismissed from PPDAA “for Violating Civil Service Code.”
The Executive Director of the Public Procurement and Disposal of Assets Authority (PPDAA), Deng Akuei Kak, has announced the termination of Mr. Martin Mabior Mawien from his position within the authority.

This action, according to Deng, is in accordance with Section 82(d) of the Civil Service Act, 2011, and the PPDAA Act of 2018. The decision comes after Mr. Mawien was found to have violated provisions of the law that prohibit civil servants from making statements against the government.

“Based on the laws of South Sudan, including the Civil Service Act, 2011, which clearly outlines the expected conduct of civil servants, I hereby terminate Mr. Martin Mabior Mawien from his position,” Deng stated.

Mr. Mawien was previously removed from his post as Undersecretary for Information shortly after his appointment.

No response has yet been issued by Mr. Mawien regarding the termination.

Governor James Koang Chuol Visits Buol/Burebiey and Nasir Town, Calls for Peace and Stability in Nasir County.

Nasir, 14 May 2025 – Today, His Excellency Lt. Gen. James Koang Chuol Ranley, the Governor of Upper Nile State, made an important visit to Buol/Burebiey, a border area next to Ethiopia, and then traveled to Nasir Town in Nasir County.

During his visit, Governor James Koang thanked the Army Commanders for welcoming him warmly. He also praised the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) for their hard work in bringing back peace and order to Nasir County. The Governor encouraged people who had left their homes because of the conflict to come back, assuring them that the area is now calm and safe.

Governor James Koang was accompanied by senior security officers to show the government’s strong commitment to keeping peace and security in the region.

This visit comes after the SSPDF successfully took control of the border areas near Ethiopia, which were previously held by armed groups. The operation was peaceful, with no fighting or injuries.

Since becoming Governor in March 2025, Lt. Gen. James Koang has been working hard to bring peace, stability, and development to Upper Nile State. His visit today is part of ongoing efforts to support the community, rebuild trust, and ensure a safe environment for all residents of Nasir County.

The Office of the Governor remains dedicated to supporting peace and encouraging everyone to work together for a better future in Upper Nile State.

UNDP donates IT equipment to Upper Nile University

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has donated 20 desktop computers and a projector to Upper Nile University to enhance learning and research at the institution.

The university, which relocated to Juba in 2014 due to safety concerns during South Sudan’s civil war, previously operated in Malakal — one of the areas hardest hit by the conflict.

The donation is part of UNDP’s broader program supporting public universities to strengthen research capabilities.

During the handover ceremony Tuesday, UNDP senior economic advisor Ligane Sene said the initiative, in partnership with the African Development Bank, aims to empower South Sudanese youth through research opportunities.

“We are proud to provide these ICT resources, along with capacity-building support, including statistical tools like STATA,” Sene said. “This will help students conduct data analysis, develop research proposals, and present their findings effectively.”

He added that the equipment would benefit not only the economics department but also other faculties and contribute to the university’s computer facilities.

Flora Eliab Severino Lado, the university’s deputy vice-chancellor for administration and finance, thanked UNDP for its continued support, noting the challenges of operating as a displaced institution.

“We appreciate the Central Equatoria government for providing temporary space, but the current environment limits our ability to expand and meet growing educational demands,” she said.

Lado said the donation would improve research and help the university provide policymakers with critical data.

Beware of the Lurbääng’s Recordings for Food in Town! My appeal to the first Family to forgive Martin Mabior Mawien

By: Ateny Wek Ateny
May 14th, 2025

“The word Lurbääng is the Agäär-Jieng’s word for those self-centered, selfish or egoistic personalities”. It goes for those individuals or groups who in the process of looking for something to eat, they cause a situation that would result in providing plenty food for free. It could also go for sycophants.

The Lurbääng, often reminds the man/men known for sacrificing other cows for their prestigious oxen to consider spearing more cows in order to gain the approval of immortal being. Then the speared cows are eaten by the Lurbääng , while the owner of the oxen pays the compensation. I love the Agäär-Jieng’s dialect for embracing very vast vocabulary.

Now, this is the scenario of Mr. Martin Mabior Mawien. He was recorded in a tea place while on informal conversation. The Lurbääng have recorded Mabior Mawien some years back, but decided to release the audio on Mabior’s appointment. Truly, the Lurbääng got what they want. But, what next?

It is a lesson learned that anyone who dare to genuinely converse with his/her acquaintances even in a toilet must be cautious of what to say. Say what you mean anytime, even when it doesn’t favor. Those who talk must always have evidence of what they wants to talk about — if they must frustrate Lurbääng.

Though my friend Martin Mabior was genuinely reiterating a point discussed elsewhere before, the recording by Lurbääng has done him serious damage— having lost a life time position in the government. However, had this recording was done in a formal conversation, I am sure Martin Mabior would have spoke very responsibly. This is a man, I knew he is always careful. He was caught off-guard — for he didn’t know someone was trying to feed on him.

The rumor of some names including that of a member of the first family having some portion from Revenue Authority’s proceeds, is a common knowledge — spoken amongst gossipers in town. However, with no evidence of the first family member involvement in hands, responsible men/women should not speak about it, whether they are being recorded or not. Had I have evidence of this information, right in my hand, I would rightfully said it louder.

So, Mabior is a victim of trying to kill time with his acquaintances at the tea place. Tea places attracts jobless people whether by default or by design. And Martin Mabior could have now left the tea place, had it not been for the fact that his appointment was revoked. The Lurbääng have managed to return Martin Mabior back to tea place. But, Martin is not against the government, the President, and his family whatsoever. This is the man I know for harboring a quality of principled being.

Finally, I urge Madam Adut Kiir Mayardit (to whom I knew she had a heart of forgiveness like her father) to discard the audio of a conversation made by a man who was just killing time. Mabior didn’t intend to cause harm to you and the entire first family. Imagine, I am one of those who don’t want to oppose the government of President Kiir whatsoever, and I knew Mabior stand along the same principle. I urge the President and the first family to spare time to understand who Mabior is. He is not and will never oppose the SPLM led government.

The Lurbääng have succeeded by using an audio that portrayed Mabior as, if he was intending to cause harm to the first family. Nonetheless, Martin Mabior loves the first family to the best of my knowledge. So, I appeal to the President’s family not to press hard on Mabior. We have already forgiven even those who killed, maimed, slain or even massacred thousands and even gave them positions of power. What, if we also forgive Martin Mabior for talking in the tea place. I bet his contribution, which the (Lurbääng has the audacity to record) was meant for killing time.
