University of Bahr el-Ghazal dismisses 12 students for protest involvement
The University of Bahr el-Ghazal has dismissed twelve students following accusations of inciting unrest and leading a series of protests against a tuition fee increment approved by the university senate earlier this month.
A dismissal letter from the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Administration and Finance accuses the student of organizing a late-night meeting on May 22, 2025, to incite protests against a tuition hike for medical students to USD 300.
The university administration claimed the protest went ahead despite prior warnings, citing concerns that public demonstrations could lead to insecurity and potentially attract individuals with political motives.
The administration described the student's actions as a violation of university regulations.
The letter further detailed an incident on May 23, where the student is accused of threatening a university security guard with a pistol at dawn and locking the main gate with a solid U-shaped lock.
This action reportedly disrupted access to the university for several days and was labeled an act of attempted violence, and rebellion.
Later that same day, the student allegedly led a public demonstration without approval from relevant authorities.
Another meeting was reportedly held on May 26 at the university hostel, despite an emergency decision from the Deans's Board on May 23 that had ordered the immediate closure of hostels and a halt to university operations.
The university also accused the student of making politically sensitive remarks during these meetings, which included controversial statements about senior national leaders.
