: Security forces have recovered the body of Kapoeta East County Commissioner Stephen Lowosio Lomongin following a deadly attack in the disputed Kessengor area, authorities have confirmed.
According to Jacob Werchum, Minister of Information for the Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA), the commissioner's body was found during ongoing security and search operations launched after armed attackers stormed the area.
"This morning there was an attack in Kessengor. Heavily armed youth, some wearing military uniforms, attacked the area. The commissioner was killed. I am told a body was found and it is believed to be his," Werchum said.
Officials say the commissioner was caught in a violent ambush that erupted during clashes involving armed youth and security personnel.
Security operations remain underway in Kessengor and surrounding areas, including near the local airstrip, as authorities continue efforts to restore calm and establish the full circumstances of the attack.
The Government of Eastern Equatoria State has officially confirmed the death of Commissioner Lomongin and strongly condemned what it described as a deliberate attack.
In a statement issued on Thursday, state authorities said the commissioner was ambushed while traveling on official duty to Kessengor. The government called for an immediate investigation and urged security agencies to bring those responsible to justice.
The state also appealed to residents of Kapoeta East and the wider Eastern Equatoria region to remain calm and avoid retaliatory actions while investigations continue.
The killing comes amid growing tensions over Kessengor, a contested area claimed by both Eastern Equatoria State and the Greater Pibor Administrative Area.
In recent days, officials from the two administrations exchanged accusations over activities in the border region, highlighting deepening disagreements
