Notable 11 court cases across Africa 2025:

1. Democratic Republic of Congo: A military court in Kinshasa sentenced former President Joseph Kabila to death in absentia, finding him guilty of treason, war crimes, and crimes against humanity.

2. South Africa: Opposition leader Julius Malema was found guilty of violating firearm laws related to a 2018 incident in which he fired a rifle at a political rally. Malema’s claim that the weapon was a toy gun was rejected. The case is ongoing.

3. Tanzania – Shaibu and Others v. United Republic of Tanzania: The court allowed the reopening of pleadings and permitted participation of amici curiae in a case alleging violations of electoral rights.

4. Côte d'Ivoire – Gbagbo v. Republic of Côte d'Ivoire: The court delivered its judgment on 26 June 2025.

10. South Sudan – South Sudan vs SPLM-IO (Dr. Riek Machar, Dr. Puot Kang & six others): The Nasir incident case is ongoing.

11. Government of Uganda vs Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye. The legal proceedings are ongoing and have not yet concluded.

BREAKING: The Special Court hearing on the Nasir Incident involving Puot Kang Chuol, Dr. Riek Machar Teny, and six other accused persons has been adjourned to Friday, October 3, 2025.

The adjournment followed a prosecution request, citing that the lead investigator was exhausted after presenting witness statements concerning four of the accused. While the defense opposed the request, the judge ruled in favor of the prosecution and postponed the session.
