UNITY - More than 24,000 people in Leer County have been affected by flash floods and are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance, according to local authorities.

Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC) Coordinator James Dor Mathiang said heavy rains and rising Nile water levels have submerged half of the county’s 16 payams, forcing families to flee to higher ground.

“The flood situation worsened after five consecutive days of rain,” Mathiang said

He said the displaced people are living without adequate food, medicine, or shelter, and warned of a growing risk of waterborne diseases.
