President Salva Kiir has appointed James Mawich Makuach as the new Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, replacing Pal Mai Deng.

The appointment comes after Pal Mai, a senior member of the SPLM-IO, deserted Juba following the house arrest of First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar in March this year.

In recent months, Pal Mai has issued several public statements on behalf of the SPLM-IO, accusing President Kiir’s SPLM faction of undermining the Revitalized Peace Agreement.

The Embassies of Canada, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, the United Kingdom, and the United States have expressed deep concern over the escalating hostilities in several parts of South Sudan, warning that the renewed violence poses a serious threat to the country’s fragile peace process.

In a joint statement, the embassies condemned the ongoing violations of the ceasefire and the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS), describing the flare-up in fighting as a blatant breach of commitments made by South Sudanese leaders.

President Salva Kiir Mayardit has revoked the appointment of Hon. Reath Muoch Tang, a leading member of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-in-Opposition (SPLM-IO), from his position as Member of Parliament.

Hon. Reath, who was first elected to the Transitional National Legislative Assembly (TNLA) in 2010, is currently residing in the United States. His dismissal comes a month after a controversy surrounding his attendance at an International Monetary Fund (IMF) meeting in New York

The controversy arose following the United States’ imposition of visa restrictions on several South Sudanese officials. Despite the restrictions, the government delegation was later cleared to attend the IMF event, but it disassociated itself from Hon. Reath, stating that he did not officially represent the Government of South Sudan.
