Despite being one of South Sudan’s most resource-rich regions, Unity State continues to grapple with severely poor road infrastructure, posing major challenges to transportation, trade, and access to essential services.

Residents say the deteriorating road network has become a critical barrier to economic development and effective service delivery across the state. Many blame the situation on years of neglected road maintenance, which has left major routes between counties and the state capital, Bentiu, in an unusable condition, especially during the rainy season.

In a strongly worded statement issued on Saturday, the SPLM-IO claimed that Dr. Machar’s life is in serious danger and called for urgent preventive measures to ensure his safety.

In a statement released by Puok Both Baluang, Acting Press Secretary in the Office of First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar, the SPLM-IO described the Unity State government’s decision as an “irrational and punitive action” following a peaceful protest by IDP camp residents on September 24.

The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-In Opposition (SPLM-IO) has strongly condemned the suspension of 24 headteachers from schools operating in Bentiu’s IDP camp, calling the move politically motivated and a violation of constitutional rights.

Once united by a common cause the fight against Arab domination and systemic oppression South Sudanese leaders like President Salva Kiir Mayardit and Dr. Riek Machar Teny stood shoulder to shoulder in the long, bitter struggle for liberation. As young revolutionaries, they dedicated their youth to the dream of a free and independent South Sudan, inspiring hope across a nation yearning for self-determination.

But today, that shared vision stands fractured. Political rivalry, mistrust, and repeated cycles of violence have replaced the unity that once defined the liberation era. The very leaders who once fought together for freedom now find themselves on opposing sides of power struggles that continue to haunt the world’s youngest nation.
