: Heavy military deployment in Juba fuels public fear. A heavy deployment of military forces on major roads across South Sudan’s capital, Juba, caused fear and uncertainty among residents on Thursday, with authorities offering few details about the unusual security presence.

Soldiers were seen at several key locations, including Seventh Day Adventist Roundabout, near the University of Juba, along Ministries Road close to parliament, as well as Amarat and Airport Road.

Witnesses told Radio Tamazuj that the number of forces appeared especially large, including armoured personnel carriers (APCs).

The deployment sparked concern among residents, with some offices closing early and workers rushing home. Traffic continued to move, but many people appeared anxious as businesses weighed whether to remain open.

“It is my first time to see this kind of thing happening in South Sudan,” one resident said, speaking on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals.

“I saw different cars with soldiers. They looked happy, but I don’t know what is happening.”

The resident said people were frightened by the uncertainty. “I feel scared, but I don’t know what is happening,” the person said.

Another resident, who also requested anonymity, said the atmosphere in the city was tense.

South Sudan’s Vice President for the Service Cluster, Hussein Abdelbagi, arrived in Rumbek on Sunday ahead of the second graduation ceremony of the University of Science and Technology.

Abdelbagi is expected to preside over the ceremony on Monday at Rumbek Freedom Square on behalf of President Salva Kiir Mayardit, who serves as chancellor of public universities.

He was received by Lakes State Governor Madhang Majok Meen, state officials and residents, according to a statement from his office.

The vice president traveled by road from Juba, a journey his office said allowed him to assess infrastructure conditions along the route.

He is accompanied by several senior government officials, including Senior Presidential Envoy on Special Programs Adut Salva Kiir, as well as the ministers of general education, higher education, health and labor.

During the visit, Abdelbagi is expected to inaugurate a newly built accommodation facility at the university and visit Kiir Mayardit Hospital and Rumbek Secondary School to assess service delivery, particularly in the education and health sectors.

He is also scheduled to meet with the state governor to discuss challenges affecting service delivery in Lakes State and review progress under the government’s Services Cluster.

This president really walayi!

South Sudan's Kiir sacks parliament speaker and deputy

1. Tulio Odongi Ayahu, chief whip of Kiir's ruling Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM), announced the decree removing Speaker Jemma Nunu Kumba and her deputy, Permena Awerial Aluong, from their posts in the Transitional National Legislative Assembly.

2. The move follows a petition last week by SPLM caucus members accusing Kumba of corruption linked to the alleged mismanagement of parliamentary funds and calling for her removal.

3. Kumba, who made history in 2021 as the first woman to serve ‌as speaker of South Sudan's parliament, has not responded to the allegations.

4. Kiir appointed Joseph Ngere Paciko and Abuk Paiti Ayiik as the new speaker and deputy speaker, respectively.

The sackings come after Kiir in late February abruptly fired the Finance Minister Bak Barnaba Chol, who had been in office for just three months, without giving a reason.

Analysts say Kiir frequently reshuffles senior political and military posts to maintain his grip on power amid persistent instability and speculation over his eventual succession.
