Earlier today, Vice President Dr. Benjamin Bol Mel conferred with Amb. Jama Hassan Khalif, the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Somalia to South Sudan.

The discussion focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation - with particular attention to regional security, economic investment, and diplomatic engagement. Both leaders agreed to deepen ties in ways that uplift both nations and contribute to a more integrated and prosperous region.

The Vice President underscored the centrality of trade and commerce to South Sudan’s economic growth and acknowledged the positive contribution of the Somali business community to the local economy. He called on relevant authorities to strengthen these business linkages and explore new avenues for greater investment.

Ambassador Khalif, in turn, expressed appreciation for the continued hospitality of the South Sudanese Government and reaffirmed Somalia’s strong interest in expanding cooperation - particularly in economic development, job creation, and market access.

Bound by a shared vision and longstanding ties of brotherhood and resilience, South Sudan and Somalia are ushering in a new chapter of strategic partnership rooted in trust, mutual respect, and ambition - all for the benefit of the South Sudanese people.

𝐉𝐮𝐛𝐚, 𝐌𝐚𝐲 𝟓, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓 — The President of the Republic and Commander-In-Chief of the Supreme Armed Forces Gen. Salva Kiir Mayardit on Monday presided over the oath-taking ceremony of Madut Dut Yel as the new Presidential Advisor on National Security Affairs, and Gen. Thoi Chany Reat as Director General of the General Intelligence Bureau of the National Security Service.

President Kiir urged the new officials to display dedication and commitment to the service of the nation. "Let’s focus on addressing the challenges facing our nation," he said, calling on all South Sudanese to unite in confronting the country’s current difficulties.

The president reiterated that nation-building required concerted efforts from the citizens, directing the new officials to cooperate with their colleagues in other institutions in an effort to realise a peaceful and cohesive society.

Gen. Thoi Chany Reat assumes the Intelligence Chief role from General Simon Yien Makuach, who had held the position since 2021.

🔹 Key Milestones in Dr. Lam Akol's Career:

1. Advocacy for Federalism (1991)
In 1991, alongside Dr. Riek Machar Teny, Dr. Lam Akol was instrumental in calling for a federal system of governance in Sudan. Their efforts aimed to address the systemic marginalization and promote decentralization. This period also marked the split within the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/A), known as the Nasir Declaration.

2. Fashoda Peace Agreement
🔹 Dr. Lam Akol was a key signatory of the 1997 Fashoda Peace Agreement between the Sudanese government and the SPLM/A-United faction. This agreement sought to resolve longstanding conflicts, although its implementation faced significant challenges.

3.Founding of the Democratic Movement
Dr. Lam Akol established the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement for Democratic Change (SPLM-DC) in 2009, promoting multiparty democracy and reforms. Currently, he leads the

The SPLM-IO National Liberation Council has declared Peace-building Minister Stephen Par Kuol as the party's interim Chairperson until FVP Dr Riek Machar is released. He is deputized by Federal Affairs Minister Losuba Wongo.
Agok Makur was announced as the Secretary General of the Party.

The office of the Vice President for the Economic Cluster announced that the government started paying the salaries for the month and these will continue as promised by the government.

President Kiir then appionted Kuyok Abol Kuyok as the new Minister of General Education, Wek Mamer as new Minister of Justice & Constitution Affairs, and Atong Kuol as new Minister of Trade & Industry
