REPORT FROM THE GROUND
Fresh information from local sources is challenging earlier accusations by Cde G*i Nyadeang that Agwelek forces and SSPDF soldiers were behind the recent attack on commercial boats near New Fangak.
According to people familiar with the security situation in the area, Agwelek and SSPDF forces based in Phom are not stationed around the exact location where the attack happened, especially after the capture of Phom from SPLM-IO forces. This has created doubts about the claims that they carried out the ambush.
Sources on the ground now allege that the attackers were armed SPLM-IO militias operating around Kuergathoini and nearby areas. The armed group reportedly attempted to stop the commercial boats at what locals described as an illegal checkpoint, allegedly with the intention of looting them. When the boat operators refused to stop, the attackers allegedly opened fire, killing two civilians instantly, injuring others, and later looting the boats.
Authorities in Phom awaiting communication from Bilpham are said to be following the situation closely as more details continue to emerge.
The incident has caused fear and concern among civilians who depend on the river for transport, trade, and movement of essential goods. Communities are now calling for protection of civilians and the reopening of safe waterways free from armed attacks and criminal activities.
As investigations continue, local reports currently dispute the narrative that Agwelek and SSPDF forces were directly responsible for the attack. Further independent verification is still needed to establish the complete facts surrounding the incident.
