Students at UBG Protest Over High Tuition Fees

Tensions are running high at the University of Bahr El Ghazal (UBG) as students take to the streets in protest against a recent increase in tuition fees imposed by the university administration.

Eyewitnesses report that hundreds of students have blocked major streets near the university campus this morning, chanting slogans and carrying placards demanding a reduction in tuition fees. The protest follows a failed negotiation between student leaders and university officials last week.

According to student representatives, the administration refused to consider a reduction in the fees despite students' appeals, citing economic inflation and the need to align tuition with current market demands.

“This is unacceptable. We are struggling to afford the current fees, and now they want to raise them again. The administration is ignoring our plight,” said a student leader who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The situation remains tense as it is unclear whether security forces will intervene to disperse the crowd or if the protest will continue to escalate. There have been no reports of violence or arrests as of yet.

Golden Jubilee Celebration of Wau Cultural Theatre

This morning, we held a press event organized by the Committee for the Golden Jubilee Celebration of the Wau Cultural Theatre led by Honorable Minister Mohamed Ali Goni of culture, youth and sports, honoring its establishment on March 3, 1975. The theme for this significant celebration is “Roles of Culture in peace building and Social Cohesion.”

Goni warmly invite the public to turn up for a five-day celebration from May 9-13, 2025, Echoed that it will include theatrical performance, seminar, workshop and culture exhibition. This event aims to highlight the vital role culture plays in unifying our communities in Western Bahr El Ghazal State and beyond.

Chairperson of WBGS Artists Union Ustaz Wol Madut Chan call on public and residents of the state and sisterly states to participate, and he also extend a special invitation to international friends to join this remarkable occasion.

During press, Ustaz Wol acknowledged that many individuals feel shame of their own cultural identities, often experiencing fear or shame.

Acting Secretary for Information golden Jubilee for Wau cultural theatre Celebration and Secretary for information of WBGS Youth Union, Mr Joseph Wek echoed that there will 9 foreign communities that will take part in this event and in his position as the spoke person of WBGSYU team in charge of the organization extend a call to everyone to take an active role in uplifting and rebuilding our culture both from within the state and it neighbors.
Come one come all to celebrate our heritage, and strengthen the bonds that connect us.

Over 60 members of the Transitional National Legislative Assembly and the National Communication Authority convened at a workshop organized by UNMISS in Juba, South Sudan. The primary focus of this gathering was to discuss the draft Computer Misuse & Cybercrime Bill, which aims to address pressing issues related to cybercrime in the country.

During the forum, participants highlighted several gaps in the enforcement of existing cybercrime laws and the need for enhanced protection of civic space. Discussions emphasized the necessity of developing a modern cybercrime law that specifically addresses challenges such as “deliberate misinformation. ”

Furthermore, there was a consensus on the importance of establishing clear guidelines for law enforcement to ensure that the implementation of these laws does not infringe on individual rights or civic freedoms.

International consultants participated in the workshop to provide expert feedback on the draft bill. They reviewed various sections and raised concerns regarding certain procedural aspects of the legislation. Their insights are invaluable in shaping a robust framework that balances the need for security with the protection of civil liberties.

This workshop marks a critical step toward advancing South Sudan's legal framework concerning cybercrime. The collaborative efforts of national legislators and international experts signal a commitment to fostering a secure digital environment while safeguarding the rights of citizens. As discussions continue, it will be essential to incorporate these insights into the final draft of the bill to ensure comprehensive and effective cybercrime legislation.

𝐉𝐮𝐛𝐚, 𝐀𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐥 𝟏𝟒, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓– President Salva Kiir Mayardit has received a detailed report from the Deputy Governor of Western Bahr el Ghazal State, Zachariah Joseph Garang, highlighting the region's progress in peace, stability, and economic development.

Deputy Governor Garang assured the President that Western Bahr el Ghazal remains largely peaceful, crediting collective efforts by the state government to foster stability and harmony. He also reported that the state government has engaged in constructive dialogue with opposition forces to strengthen their commitment to peace principles within the region.

President Kiir commended the state administration for its dedication to promoting peace and development. He praised their efforts in maintaining stability and encouraged them to continue working collaboratively to achieve sustained growth and prosperity in the State.

Tharkueng, Jur River County, Western Bahr el Ghazal State, 2 April 2025— The Ministry of Health - Republic of South Sudan has launched a cholera vaccination campaign in Tharkueng Payam in response to a significant outbreak. Since February 19, 2025, the area has reported 391 cases and 10 deaths.

Honourable Dr. Annin Ngot Ngot, of the Ministry of Health, emphasised the need for immediate action and community involvement in vaccination efforts to combat this preventable disease.

Health workers are mobilised to ensure vaccines reach every eligible individual, reflecting a commitment to manage the current crisis and prevent future outbreaks in the area.
