The United Nations condemned the repeated shelling of World Food Program (WFP) facilities in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur State, by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.

Stéphane Dujarric, spokesperson for Secretary-General António Guterres, said in a briefing Friday that the WFP was “shocked and alarmed” after its premises were hit and damaged in the attacks.

“Humanitarian staff, their assets, operations and supplies should never be a target. This must stop now, especially in places like Sudan, where over 3 million children are suffering from malnutrition,” Dujarric said.

He noted that the WFP confirmed all staff were safe and accounted for.

The agency is working to scale up food and nutrition assistance to reach 7 million people monthly, prioritizing communities facing famine or at imminent risk.

Famine has been confirmed in 10 locations—eight in North Darfur, including Zamzam Camp, and two in the Western Nuba Mountains. Another 17 areas, including parts of Darfur, the Nuba Mountains, Khartoum and Gezira, are at risk.

“The only way forward is an immediate end to hostilities,” Dujarric said.

Separately, the U.N. envoy said the Peacekeeping Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) was deeply alarmed by a surge in intercommunal violence in Tonj East, Warrap state, fueled by cattle raids and retaliatory attacks.

On May 29, armed youths attacked a community, killing at least 26 civilians, wounding 30 others and burning around 35 homes, displacing thousands.

UNMISS held urgent talks with local officials and community leaders to de-escalate tensions and prevent further mobilization. Peacekeeping patrols have also been increased in the area.

The mission called on communities to end the violence and urged the government to deploy security forces to prevent further retaliation.

South Sudan vs Uganda

Border authorities in Uganda say people are fleeing Morobo County, with reports of killing and abduction.

MAY 29th – Authorities in Uganda’s Koboko District say people from the neighbouring South Sudan’s Morobo County in Central Equatoria are fleeing, as Uganda has intensified its security at the border with South Sudan amid escalating tensions between the South Sudan government forces and opposition groups.

Uganda’s Daily Monitor reports that among those relocated to refugee settlements or back to their countries of origin are individuals without clear identification. Mr Emmy Mitala, the Koboko Residence District Commissioner (RDC), says there have been cases of Ugandans being abducted, robbed, and killed by armed individuals crossing from South Sudan.

So far, two Ugandans have been confirmed killed, with others unaccounted for, and nearly 20 abducted by South Sudanese armed groups who demand ransom.

Insecurity has since then intensified in Morobo County, displacing over 7000 people in dire need of humanitarian assistance. Central Equatoria State officials on Wednesday also confirmed reports of Kaya highway vehicle attacks, killing two people in Morobo County, close to Uganda’s Koboko District.

Justice Benjamin Baak Deng holds an LLB from the University of Khartoum. I am not sure of his other qualifications. He graduated from the Faculty of Law in 1978. Their class was the largest number of Southern Sudanese admitted to the Faculty. It included: Chan Reej, Yoanes Akol, Ruben Madol, Joseph Agoth, Tikley Abiem, Aleu Akechak Jok and others. All of them joined the Sudan Judiciary upon graduation. Baak was the only one among them who continued in the Judiciary rising to the Court of Appeal. Yoanes resigned when the Islamic law was imposed in September 1983. At one stage Chan Reej joined one of the UN agencies. Tikley went to Saudia. The others joined the SPLM/SPLA at different times.

Baak was a member of the Judicial Review Committee (JRC), a requirement of R-ARCSS. He was representing, rather curiously, the SPLM. The JRC has submitted its recommendations to the President last year.

It was reported that the outgoing CJ was uncomfortable with some of the recommendations of the JRC, especially the establishment of an independent Constitutional Court and the new structure and chairmanship of the Judicial Service Commission. If the new CJ implements his part of the JRC recommendations he would have rendered great service to the country.
