BoSS refutes Eye Radio report on currency printing

The Bank of South Sudan has dismissed a report by Eye Radio which said that Governor Dr. Addis Ababa Othow announced plans to print additional currency to pay civil servants.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the bank clarified that it does not have the legal authority to print money for salary payments or to finance government expenditure. The clarification came after reports suggested the governor made the comments during the opening of the first Revenue Institute in Juba.

“The Bank operates independently and cannot print money for salaries. Any budget deficits are usually covered through domestic or external borrowing, not currency printing,” the statement read.

The bank urged Eye Radio to withdraw the report and called on the media to uphold ethical standards in financial reporting.
