The date of construction of the palace is not accurately known, but the earliest date stamped on one of the walls goes to the sixth century AD, also did not know who built this palace, specifically due his name to a family inhabited (Family Al Shahbandar), where renovated the palace in the first half of the twentieth century. Been documented three artifacts are rare and found in the palace has been found in the courtyard of the palace a piece of mosaic dating back to the Byzantine period, we have returned to its place in the main wall of one the wings and other similar has been decorating the wall of main the lounge, and the column which goes back to 2000 years ago, a columns from Jupiter Temple
The Palace is located at the junction of three lanes: Avenue Qaimarie and street Al Menkhlana and street Al Shahbandar
The Palace is considered the most important palace in the area because of it is archaeological building. It is occupied an area of approximately 600 square meters and won a wide reputation as contained by the images of the road architectural and evidence in the construction
It has two entrances, the eastern one is the main entrance (from Al Qaimarie street) with two broad wooden doors and lead the entrance roofed corridor followed by two stairs, the first leads to the upper section and the second to the courtyard and then to the hotel rooms, the other entrance is from the north and used as service entrance. وتاريخ تشييد هذا القصر ليس معروفا بدقة الا أن أقدم علامة مدموغة على احدى الجدران تعود الى القرن السادس عشر للميلاد , كذلك لايعرف من بنى هذا القصر تحديدا ويعود اسمه الحالي الى اخر عائلة سكنته ( عائلة الشهبندر) حيث رممته في النصف الأول من القرن العشرين .
تم توثيق ثلاثة قطع أثرية نادرة وجدت في القصر فقد وجد في باحة القصر قطعة فسيفساء تعود الى الحقبة البيزنطية تم اعادتها الى مكانها في الجدار الرئيسئ لاحدى الأجنحة في القصر وأخرى مماثلة تم تزيين جدار الليوان الرئيسي بها , وعمود يعود الى 2000 سنة مضت وهو من أعمدة معبد جوبتير الشهير .
يقع قصر الشهبندر على ملتقى ثلاثة أزقة: شارع القيمرية وجادة المنكلاني وجادة الشهبندر ويعد هذا القصر الأثري الفخم من أهم القصور في حي القيمرية وتبلغ مساحته نحو 600 متر مربع, وحظي بشهرة واسعة لما احتوى عليه من صور للابداع المعماري وشواهد في البناء والزخرفة المتألقة .
وللقصر مدخلان, الشرقي منهما هو المدخل الرئيسي (من جادة المنكلاني) ذو بابين عريضين خشبيين و يؤدي باب الدخول الى دهليز مسقوف يتبعه درجان الأول يؤدي الى القسم العلوي والثاني الى أرض الديار ومن ثم غرف الفندق وهذا المدخل كلن في ماسبق يسمى بمدخل السرملك ( أي مخل الرجال) وأما المدخل الجنوبي (من جادة الشهبندر) فقد سمي مدخل الحرملك ( أي مدخل النساء)
