Ubombo Sugar Employees Set for 99th Comrades Marathon

Seven employees from Ubombo Sugar Limited are set to take on the 99th edition of the Comrades Marathon on Sunday, 14 June 2026.

The runners will tackle the challenging 85.7km "Up Run" from Durban to Pietermaritzburg, one of the toughest endurance events in world sport.

Ubombo Sugar has wished its athletes well, praising their dedication, resilience, teamwork, and determination. The company says the same commitment displayed in the workplace is what drives its employees to succeed on the world-renowned ultramarathon stage.

As schools reopen, Ubombo Sugar Limited has once again demonstrated its commitment to community development by supporting underprivileged learners through its ongoing Back-To-School Campaign.

Learners from Ndzevane High School and Mavalela Primary School received sanitary packs and school shoes aimed at helping remove some of the barriers that affect access to education.
The initiative forms part of the companyโ€™s โ€œEnd Period Poverty Campaign,โ€ which seeks to support school-going girls who struggle with limited access to sanitary products. A total of 200 sanitary packs will be distributed, with the support expected to last at least two months.
In addition, 100 pairs of school shoes will be donated to boys and girls from vulnerable families, helping learners attend school with dignity and confidence. Big Bend High School is also among the schools expected to benefit from the campaign.

Ubombo Sugar employees also played a role in the initiative by contributing sanitary products through an internal donation drive, highlighting the companyโ€™s culture of giving back to the community.

The campaign continues to reflect Ubombo Sugar Limitedโ€™s commitment to learner wellbeing, educational support, and uplifting communities around the areas it operates in.

The family of the late Phumlani "Manyika" Ngwenya wishes to inform relatives, friends, and members of the community of the funeral arrangements. A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 12:30 PM at Mayaluka Big Bend Eweseli Hall, followed by a night vigil at his parental home. The funeral service will take place on Sunday at Lavumisa, Somntongo. The family warmly welcomes all who wish to join them in celebrating his life and paying their final respects.
