Chelsea player ratings vs Nottingham Forest: Cole Palmer and Marc Cucurella produce shameful showings as abysmal Blues embarrassed yet again to end top-five hopes

Chelsea's hopes of securing a top-five finish in the Premier League were ended on Monday as they put in a shameful performance in losing 3-1 to Nottingham Forest. Cole Palmer missed from the penalty spot as the Blues' run of league defeats stretched to six games, meaning their hopes of securing Champions League qualification for next season hang by the finest of threads.

Forest made eight changes ahead of the second leg of their Europa League semi-final against Aston Villa on Thursday, making Chelsea heavy favourites to claim victory, but the Blues fell behind after just 98 seconds when Taiwo Awoniyi headed in at the back post from Dilane Bakwa's cross.

Enzo Fernandez hit the post as Chelsea looked for an instant response, but they instead found themselves 2-0 down before the quarter-hour mark after Malo Gusto was penalised for pulling back Awoniyi in the penalty area, and Igor Jesus made no mistake from the spot.

Calum McFarlane's side were handed a golden opportunity to pull one back right on half-time after a sickening clash of heads between Zach Abbott and Jesse Derry led to Chelsea being awarded a penalty. However, after a 12-minute stoppage while Premier League debutant Derry was tended to by medics before being stretchered off, Palmer had his spot-kick saved by Matz Sels.

More misery followed after the break as Awoniyi netted his second of the game after substitute Morgan Gibbs-White got in behind the Chelsea defence and laid it on a plate for Forest's No.9 to tap home.

Joao Pedro did have a potential consolation ruled out by VAR for offside while Palmer was again denied by Sels before Chelsea finally broke their nine-hour league goal drought in stoppage time as Pedro produced a superb overhead kick that flew into the net. They remain ninth in the table, however, with their hopes of securing any kind of European football via their finishing position dwindling.

GOAL rates Chelsea's players from Stamford Bridge...

Goalkeeper & Defence
Robert Sanchez (5/10):

Couldn't do much about any of the Forest goals, and showed decent handling otherwise. Forced off with a head injury midway through the second half.

Malo Gusto (3/10):

Stupidly pulled back Awoniyi to give away the penalty. Carried the ball over the halfway line with regularity, but then didn't do much with it from there until his cross led to Pedro's consolation.

Trevoh Chalobah (4/10):

Lost Awoniyi for both of the Forest striker's goals. Made a couple of decent challenges but otherwise far from his best.

Tosin Adarabioyo (4/10):

Made to look cumbersome by the intelligent movement of Jesus and slowed things down when in possession. Replaced by Colwill at the break.

Marc Cucurella (2/10):

A dreadful day at the office. Left in the dust by Bakwa as the winger first created Awoniyi's opener and then provided the cross that led to the Forest penalty. Chelsea's left-back looked flustered from there on, and routinely shanked the ball out of play.

Midfield
Romeo Lavia (4/10):

Too often Forest got in behind the Chelsea midfield in large part due to Lavia's lack of positional discipline, while on the ball he didn't offer much. Off before the hour for Santos.

Moises Caicedo (4/10):

Failed to apply much control to the hosts' engine room before losing track of Gibbs-White's run in the build-up to Forest's third.

Enzo Fernandez (5/10):

Unfortunate to see his shot come back off the post at 1-0, but faded badly as the game wore on.

Attack
Cole Palmer (2/10):

Woeful penalty summed up his afternoon. Curled one shot narrowly wide but his final product was otherwise dreadful. Whether fitness related or not, he looks a shadow of his former self.

Joao Pedro (4/10):

His usual excellent hold-up play was nowhere to be seen while he was lucky to avoid a booking for a desperate dive in the first half. Moved out to the left after Derry's injury and fared little better until his superbly acrobatic goal gave the home fans that were left inside the ground something to cheer about.

Jesse Derry (5/10):

Showed plenty of confidence on his Premier League debut after being caught out defensively a couple of times early on. So unfortunate to be forced off with what looked to be a serious injury following the penalty incident late in the first half.

Neymar will accept Brazil bench role to fulfill World Cup dream as Casemiro insists Carlo Ancelotti is perfect coach to handle injury-plagued star

Manchester United midfielder Casemiro has thrown his weight behind Neymar making Brazil's 2026 World Cup squad, suggesting the forward is willing to sacrifice his starting spot to chase the trophy. With the Seleção's final roster set to be announced on May 18, the veteran midfielder believes the Santos star still has a vital role to play under Carlo Ancelotti.

Neymar doesn't need to be star attraction for Brazil
Constant injury troubles have prevented Neymar from featuring for the national team since 2023, well before Carlo Ancelotti took over as Selecao boss. Despite constantly missing out on calls due to fitness issues, Ancelotti has not ruled out including the 34-year-old in the squad for the summer competition. It is unlikely the forward would be drafted into the starting XI due to his long absence, but midfielder Casemiro, one of the team’s senior figures, has insisted that his co-star does not need to be the star of the show.

In my opinion, Neymar never had that kind of problem. He even has the age and experience to be one of the captains of the national team," Casemiro told ESPN. "And he never cared about that in the national team. He always said: 'give the ball to me, let's have fun and play football. And, man, that's me. I want to have fun on the field, I want to enjoy myself on the field.' And Neymar has always demonstrated that.

"Neymar never had that role of wanting to be tough. Neymar has always been a guy who wanted to have fun on the field. And I think that if you talk to him, in my opinion, about his desire to play in a World Cup, and you propose, if Ancelotti proposes [a bench role] to him, I think he will want to go to the national team, because he wants to [play in the World Cup]. Then he gets there and he shows it on the field and shows it in training."

'No better coach' than Ancelotti for Santos star
Holding the reins during this transitional period is Ancelotti, a manager renowned for his ability to manage big egos and complex squad rotations. United midfielder Casemiro has been vocal in his support for the Italian tactician, insisting that there is no one better equipped to handle a player of Neymar's stature and fitness profile. Ancelotti’s history of success with veteran stars at Real Madrid and AC Milan provides a blueprint for how Brazil might utilise Neymar effectively.

Casemiro praised his manager, saying: "I think you'd have to have a conversation [with Neymar] and you'd come and talk: look, you're not going to play as many games, but look, in a certain game, you're going to be crucial for those 20 minutes, 30 minutes. Or you're going to play that game. I think it's just a conversation.

"So, I repeat, it's not what Ancelotti will think. So I think that bombshell is Ancelotti's, and there's no better coach in the world, with more experience in the world, to handle a situation like that. So, I'm sure that the decision he makes will always be in the best interest of the group."

Neymar doesn’t need to prove anything, says Casemiro
Casemiro admitted that constant discussions about Neymar’s place in the Brazil national team have become repetitive but insisted he has never avoided the topic.

“It’s annoying because everyone talks about [Neymar in the World Cup], everyone asks, and everyone answers. Especially me. I’m honestly a friend of Neymar’s — I’ve known him since he was 12. But in my opinion it’s very clear: Neymar doesn’t have to prove anything to anyone,” Casemiro said. "It all depends on whether he can get as close as possible to his best physical condition. Because in terms of talent, there is no need to discuss what a great player he is."

Judge apologizes to alleged would-be Trump assassin, drags Jan. 6 suspects into rant over jail complaints

A federal judge on Monday decried the prison treatment of President Donald Trump's alleged would-be assassin, and apologized to him for restrictive confinement imposed by jail staff.

Cole Allen, 31, has been in federal custody since prosecutors say he attempted to gain access to White House Correspondents' Dinner ballroom and kill Trump along with other high-level government officials.

Magistrate Judge Zia Faruqui told an attorney representing the Department of Corrections (DOC) that he was "fascinated and disturbed" by Allen's treatment in jail. Allen was placed on su***de watch when he was first imprisoned.

Su***de watch protocols mandated that Cole remain 24-hour lockdown in a "safe cell," have no phone access to call or receive visits from anyone other than his legal team, according to the motion. His lawyers also wanted him to be able to obtain a tablet to assist in his legal defense.

WHCD SHOOTING SUSPECT PLANNED TO TARGET TRUMP OFFICIALS, MANIFESTO REVEALS

He was also allegedly denied a copy of the Bible despite more than one request.

Prosecutor Jocelyn Ballantine reasoned that since Allen told investigators he did not expect to survive the alleged attack, he could be a danger to himself.

But an incredulous Faruqui wasn't convinced by that argument. The judge drew comparisons between Allen and defendants arrested for rioting at the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

"To me it’s extremely disturbing that he was put in five-point restraints, a person with no criminal history," Faruqui said, later adding that Allen is presumed innocent. "It’s troubling. I never heard of one January 6 defendant who was put in five-point restraints or in a safe cell. If the only way to keep him safe is the most punitive thing, that’s a problem."

The judge said even January 6 defendants were only house in a Correctional Treatment Facility (CTF), a less restrictive form of prison housing.

Breaking News - Iran attacks UAE; U.S. says it sank boats in Strait of Hormuz

An already shaky ceasefire between the United States and Iran appeared to be on the verge of collapse Monday, as the United Arab Emirates said it was under attack from Iranian drones and missiles and the U.S. reportedly said it sank Iranian boats in the Strait of Hormuz.

President Donald Trump, in a Fox News interview later Monday, warned Iran that it will be “blown off the face of the earth” if it targets U.S. ships that are protecting commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

Adm. Brad Cooper, who leads U.S. Central Command, said in a call with reporters Monday afternoon that American forces eliminated six small Iranian boats that were attempting to interfere with commercial shipping, Reuters reported.

Tehran’s state media denied that its boats had been sunk.

Stock market indices fell, and oil prices rose on news of the UAE attacks, raising investors’ fears that the war’s impact on the global economy could be exacerbated or prolonged.

The White House did not immediately respond when asked whether the reported attacks, which led the UAE to activate its missile alert system for the first time since the ceasefire began on April 8, would violate that truce.

The UAE’s Defence Ministry, in a translated post on its official X account, said Monday morning that its air defenses “are currently dealing with missile attacks and incoming drones from Iran.”

The ministry said that “the sounds heard in various parts of the country are the result of the UAE air defense systems intercepting ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones.”

In an earlier post, the ministry said that three “loitering munitions” were “intercepted over the country’s territorial waters,” while a fourth missile “fell into the sea.”

The UAE is located on the southern rim of the Persian Gulf, a major chokepoint for the shipment of oil.

A social media account associated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps later Monday appeared to confirm that it launched the attacks against the UAE.

In translated messages on Telegram, the account posted visuals of what it said were drone and missile attacks carried out by the “IRGC Cyber Corps.” One post claimed to show the aftermath of a drone attack on UAE’s Port of Fujairah, while another included a video purporting to a ship on fire following a missile strike.

An alert issued to phones in Dubai and Abu Dhabi on Monday evening local time warned people, “Due to the current situation, potential missile threats, immediately seek a safe place in the closest secure building.”

BREAKING NEWS - Nigeria summons South African envoy over attacks on its nationals

The 'March and March' demonstration in Johannesburg in April called for all illegal foreign immigrants to leave the country Nigeria has summoned South Africa's acting High Commissioner over a spate of recent attacks on foreigners in the southern African nation. Nigeria will formally convey its "profound concern" at a meeting on Monday over incidents in South Africa, saying they could affect existing relations between the countries, according to a foreign ministry statement .

The meeting will focus on recent marches held by anti-immigrant groups and "documented instances of mistreatment of Nigerian citizens and attacks on their businesses", it said. At least two Nigerians and four Ethiopians have been killed in recent weeks, local media reported, while there have been attacks on citizens of other African countries. As Africa's most industrialised country, people from elsewhere in the continent have long travelled to South Africa to seek work.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has condemned the attacks but also cautioned foreigners to respect local laws. He used his Freedom Day address last week - marking the country's first democratic elections in 1994 - to remind South Africans of the support other African nations had given in the struggle against the racist system of apartheid. But some South Africans accuse foreigners of being in the county illegally, taking jobs from locals and having links to crime, especially drugs trafficking.

Ukraine drone attack hits Russian Baltic port, governor says

Ukrainian forces also strike two shadow fleet tankers near port of Novorossiysk, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says. Ukrainian forces have launched a drone attack on the Russian Baltic Sea port of Primorsk, the governor says, as Kyiv and Moscow accuse each other of killing civilians in overnight air raids.

There was no oil spill caused by Sunday’s attack on Primorsk, a major oil-exporting outlet, but it caused a fire in the town that was extinguished, Leningrad Governor Alexander Drozdenko said. More than 60 drones were downed overnight over the northwestern region, he added.

Fernandes: I could have left Man Utd but being successful here means more=""

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has opened up on his decision to remain at Old Trafford last summer, saying he doesn't think he could replicate the feeling of being successful at "any other club in the world." The 31-year-old turned down a move to Saudi Arabia last summer in favour of remaining at United. In December, Fernandes admitted he could have left, but Sky Sports News reported that there was no desire from United to sell and he remains part of the club's long-term plans. In an exclusive sit-down with United legend and Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville, the Portuguese midfielder explained why success at United would mean more than elsewhere.

UK airlines given green light to cancel or consolidate flights to conserve jet fuel

UK airlines will be able to cancel or consolidate flights this summer under new plans to conserve jet fuel as the war in the Middle East continues to disrupt supplies. The measures are being taken to avoid major disruption as Britons jet off on their summer holidays . Airlines are looking carefully at their timetables to see which flights can be cancelled in advance and cause the least delays. New legislation would allow for actions such as consolidating schedules on routes where there are multiple flights to the same place on the same day, which could be put in place to stop last-minute cancellations, the government announced on Sunday.

The changes will allow airlines to give back a limited proportion of their allocated takeoff and landing slots without losing the right to operate them the following season. Usually, cancelling these puts airlines at risk of losing the slots, meaning sometimes they run half-empty planes in order to keep the right to use them. Airlines will be cancelling flights well in advance if there is a jet fuel shortage , meaning passengers can be moved on to similar services much earlier. If flights have not sold a significant proportion of tickets, these may also be cancelled in order to prevent wasting fuel from running near-empty planes, say ministers.

Under the plans, flights will have to be cancelled at least two weeks in advance. Rob Bishton, the chief executive of the UK Civil Aviation Authority, said: “Relaxing the rules around slots at airports will allow airlines more flexibility and so we expect them to give passengers as much notice as possible of cancellations during this period.” The plans were hatched at a meeting last Thursday between the transport secretary, Heidi Alexander, and representatives from Heathrow and Gatwick airports, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and easyJet. The strait of Hormuz, a key artery for oil and gas, has been closed in effect since the beginning of March, causing an energy crisis in many countries and leading European states to fear jet fuel shortages.
