Hardened criminals heading to Eswatini
US SAYS IT HAS SENT THIRD-COUNTRY DEPORTEES TO ESWATINI, INCLUDING CONVICTED VIOLENT CRIMINALS:
The United States has confirmed that a deportation flight carrying foreign nationals convicted of serious crimes has landed in Eswatini.
The deportees are not emaSwati citizens, but individuals from countries including Vietnam, Cuba, Jamaica, Laos, and Yemen. According to a statement by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), their home countries allegedly refused to take them back — leading to their deportation to Eswatini, which was designated as a so-called “safe third country.”
The U.S. Supreme Court recently cleared the way for such deportations, allowing the U.S. government to send migrants to countries other than their own, even without giving them the chance to argue that they may face harm.
Some of those deported on the flight were convicted of serious crimes such as child r**e and murder. The DHS described the individuals as “uniquely barbaric,” a phrase that has raised concerns among human rights advocates about the implications of relocating such individuals to third-party countries.
A recent memo from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) revealed that migrants can now be removed to third countries with as little as six hours’ notice, provided the receiving country is considered safe and has agreed not to mistreat or persecute them.
While the full terms of Eswatini’s involvement in this process remain unclear, the development raises questions about what agreements may be in place, and what it means for the country’s role in international deportation practices.
Human rights groups in the U.S. have flagged the policy shift as concerning, warning that such deportations may bypass fair legal processes and raise ethical and legal risks for host nations.
