The Nation is a monthly magazine that specializes in socio-political commentary and analysis and blends this with breaking news stories from time to time to give a different perspective on the dynamics of Swaziland’s socio-political order from the mainstream media. We have become a must-read for politicians, executives, analysts and ordinary citizens who seek to engage in a broader understanding o

f the issues that affect their daily lives. We continue to explore new ideas on how we can practice journalism in a better and more professional manner. We believe that ours is a profession that is not stagnant in an environment where new readers are still to be found and the existing ones seek a different and more incisive understanding of the issues affecting them.

Sifundza’s death still a mystery as court
orders compensation for worker who took blame

As much as Super Mabuza, a shift supervisor at the Royal Swaziland Sugar Corporation, took the fall for the May 2012 disappearance and ultimate death of Lucky Sifundza, a worker at the sugar mill, the question of how the latter died has never been answered.
That he might have died from an industrial accident was always in doubt. Murder was always suspected.
Mr Sifundza’s circumstances sound like a fairy tale. One moment, there he was at his work station, alive and well; the next, he had disappeared into thin air, never to be seen again, presumed dead.
Initially, it was suspected that he had absconded from work. But, he never showed up at home.
A few days after his disappearance, the discovery of what looked like human tissue inside the giant mills, raised the belief that he had died.
Mr Sifundza disappearance and death cost the then RSSC, now known as RES, millions of Emalangeni. Tons of sugar had to be destroyed to ensure that none of it was packed with human flesh.
Now, the company has to pay over E750 000 to Mr Mabuza, who was blamed for the disappearance and demise.

Royal Family collapsed UNESWA

The University of Eswatini has been in decline for many years now. A task team appointed by Minister of Education, Owen Nxumalo, has found that the country’s highest institution of learning has been turned into a cesspit, chiefly due to senior members of the royal family who have turned it into their fiefdom. Corruption, fraud and brazen theft are common at the university. The members of the royal family have even set up offices at UNESWA where they have been able to swindle the state institution out of millions of Emalangeni for their personal benefit

King gets a E55m pay rise

King Mswati and the royal family have received a handsome increase of E55 million for their salaries this financial year. This money is separate from that of running the palaces and King’s Office which have also been allocated an improved income too. The wages allocation for royalty far exceeds that of the struggling University of Eswatini which has been given just enough to pay salaries for staff and nothing more

Chief Justice defends the Constitution in a bid to protect his wife’s interests

It was an astonishing judgment that has exposed the hypocrisy of our courts and the confusion over the rule of law in the country. The Supreme Court has finally acknowledged that emaSwati and, particularly, junior police officers, do have rights under the Constitution. But, why the sudden change? The only logical answer is that the Chief Justice, who delivered the judgment, has a personal interest in the Phase II saga. One of his wives is a police officer
