The Mortgage Corporation Bill 2026 has passed. Here is what that means for you.

This bill is fundamentallv about creating pathways to home ownership, expanding economic opportunity, strengthening families, and ensuring that the benefits of our country's growth are more accessible to the people of these Islands.

At a time when the cost of housing continues to rise and access to mortgage financing remains beyond the reach of many hardworking Turks and Caicos Islanders, this Bill represents a practical, responsible and forward-looking response to one of the most significant social and economic challenges facing our nation.

This Bill is not merely about lending money It is about creating opportunities. It is about enabling more Turks and Caicos Islanders to move from renting to ownership. It is about helping young professionals purchase their first homes.

It is about supporting families seeking to build on family land. It is about creating a stronger middle class. It is about strengthening economic resilience through asset ownership.

And ultimately, it is about ensuring that prosperity is more broadly shared among our people.

TCI is preparing for what could become one of the most ambitious infrastructure pushes in modern history, with the Government reportedly moving toward securing a loan facility estimated at around $350 million to fund major national development projects across the islands. The proposed investment is expected to target roads, housing, airports, ports, community development, and critical public infrastructure as pressure grows from rapid population growth and record tourism numbers.

Officials have already outlined aggressive infrastructure plans in recent budget presentations, including new road networks, airport redevelopment projects, housing initiatives, drainage systems, sports facilities, and community centers throughout the Turks and Caicos Islands. The Howard Hamilton International Airport redevelopment, South Dock Port expansion, major road rehabilitation works, and new housing programs are all part of a broader long-term modernization strategy.

While many residents welcome the possibility of long-overdue upgrades, the idea of the country taking on a massive loan has already sparked public debate. Supporters argue the country urgently needs modern infrastructure to sustain economic growth and tourism expansion, while critics are expected to question long-term debt obligations and financial management.
The move signals a major shift for the Turks and Caicos Islands, especially after years of maintaining relatively low borrowing levels. If approved, the investment could reshape communities across Providenciales, Grand Turk, North Caicos, South Caicos, and beyond over the next decade.

For many, the biggest question now is simple: will this historic level of investment transform the country’s future, or create new financial pressures for generations to come?

MSC Eyes Major Cruise Port Expansion in Grand Turk
The Turks and Caicos Islands Government is moving forward with discussions surrounding a major cruise port redevelopment project in Grand Turk, with global cruise giant MSC Cruises linked to the initiative through the MSC Group and its maritime partners. The proposed development is expected to transform Grand Turk into a modern dual-purpose port capable of handling both increased cruise passenger traffic and commercial cargo operations.

According to recent reports, the project would involve expanding the island’s existing port infrastructure, including larger docking facilities, upgraded maritime structures, and enhanced tourism and commercial areas across approximately 63 acres adjacent to the current cargo port. Officials say the redevelopment would allow Grand Turk to accommodate at least two major cruise ships simultaneously, significantly increasing visitor capacity and economic activity on the island.

Premier Charles Washington Misick described the initiative as a transformational investment in the country’s maritime infrastructure and broader economy. Government projections estimate the project could generate more than 1,000 direct jobs and approximately 1,700 indirect jobs, creating new opportunities in tourism, transportation, retail, and hospitality sectors.

The development comes as Grand Turk continues experiencing record-breaking cruise arrivals, surpassing one million cruise passengers in 2025 and reinforcing its position as one of the Caribbean’s fastest-growing cruise destinations.

Antwon Walkin, a Turks and Caicos Islander, Makes History at Howard University

A proud son of the Turks and Caicos Islands has stepped into history at one of America’s most prestigious historically Black universities.
Antwon HF Walkin, a Howard University student from the Turks and Caicos Islands, has been elected Chairman/President of the Howard University Student Association Senate, becoming the 15th Chairman of the body.

His election marks a major milestone, not only for Howard University, but for the wider Caribbean. Walkin is being recognized as the first Turks and Caicos Islander, the first Caribbean national, and the first student from Howard’s College of Engineering and Architecture to rise to the Senate’s highest office.

Before this achievement, Walkin served as Chair of the University and External Affairs Committee, where he helped strengthen the Senate’s visibility, public engagement, and institutional presence.

For Turks and Caicos, this moment carries national meaning. It shows that students from small islands can lead in major global institutions, influence policy spaces, and represent their country with excellence.
Walkin’s message was clear: Caribbean students belong in every room their dreams take them to.

This is more than a personal win. It is a signal to young people across the Turks and Caicos Islands that leadership has no geographic limit.

Turks and Caicos, look at the rooms we are in. 🇹🇨

Turks and Caicos has passed one of its largest national budgets ever, with the Appropriation 2026/2027 bill passed in Parliament on Thursday, April 23, 2026.

The budget projects $551.1 million in revenue and $550.8 million in expenditure, leaving only a modest surplus. It was presented under the theme “Strong Today. Secure Tomorrow."

Premier Charles Washington Misick framed the budget as people-centred, focused on public safety, healthcare, education, infrastructure, housing and economic resilience, with no new major taxes. However, limited revenue measures are still expected, including revised business licence rates, a Climate Resilience and Environmental Levy, and Share Transfer Duty collection.

The biggest allocations are clear: Public Order and Safety, $106.2M; Health, $99.3M; General Public Services, $99.7M; Economic Affairs, $84.9M; Education, $65.9M.

The government says the economy remains strong, with GDP projected at $1.7 billion, real GDP growth forecast at 3.5%, unemployment expected below 4%, and cash reserves of about US$430 million, equal to 23% of GDP.

But here is the real issue: residents will not judge this budget by the headline number. They will judge it by traffic, healthcare access, crime, school quality, housing affordability, airport experience, cost of living and whether government services actually improve.

Top 8 Most Valuable Points For Residents:

No new major taxes, which helps avoid immediate added pressure.

$106.2M for safety and security, the largest priority allocation.

$99.3M for health, including plans to convert Family Care Medical Centre into a polyclinic.

Mortgage Corporation and Credit Union plans, expected to support home ownership and financial inclusion.

Education funding of $65.9M, if it translates into better classrooms, support and outcomes.

Infrastructure borrowing, if strictly used for roads, drainage, healthcare, housing and government modernization.

Tourism strength, with nearly 2 million visitors in 2025, including almost 640,000 stayover arrivals and over 1.3 million cruise passengers.

Strong reserves and credit rating, giving TCI more leverage for fund major developments

SONIA FULFORD RE-ELECTED TO FIFA COUNCIL UNOPPOSED: A HISTORIC MOMENT FOR THE CARIBBEAN AND WORLD FOOTBALL

Today marks a historic milestone in Caribbean and world football as Sonia Fulford has been re-elected unopposed to the FIFA Council for an unprecedented third consecutive term. This remarkable achievement reaffirms her status as a trailblazer, being the first woman to hold these positions on both the FIFA and Concacaf Council for three successive terms. Fulford was initially elected to the FIFA Council in 2013, ahead of the FIFA’s reform which introduced term limits of no more than three four-year terms, which makes Fulford the second longest-serving sitting member of the FIFA Council.

Fulford’s journey in football began on the field as a player for the Turks & Caicos Islands National Team. Her passion for the sport led her to serve as General Secretary of the Turks & Caicos Islands Football Association (TCIFA) in 2006 before being elected as its President in 2014. Over the years, she has become a formidable force in shaping the development of football in the Turks & Caicos Islands, the Caribbean and beyond.

Under her leadership, Fulford has been a relentless advocate for the growth and inclusivity of the sport, championing development programs and funding, increasing opportunities for women in football, and ensuring that smaller nations have a voice on the global stage. Her re-election is a testament to the trust and confidence placed in her by the footballing fraternity, recognizing her unwavering commitment to the sport’s progress.

Expressing gratitude for this significant moment, Fulford stated:

“I am deeply honored and humbled by the confidence shown in me by my colleagues and the global football community. This journey has never been about personal accolades but about creating opportunities, fostering growth, and ensuring that football continues to unite and inspire. I extend my heartfelt thanks to the members and stakeholders who have supported me throughout the years. My gratitude also goes to my dedicated staff and the entire TCIFA family, present and past, who have made my job easier with their unwavering commitment.
