📍 Yobuko Oba - Karatsu, Saga 🇯🇵

We stumbled across this place on a rainy day in Japan and thank goodness we did, because this place is a hidden gem FOR SURE.

We were super lucky to meet the owner and head chef, who talked us through the menu, the background of the local area, and his experience of starting the restaurant.

Let’s talk about the food:
🦑 To start, we had sashimi squid. Squid season has just started and runs from March through to October while the water is warm. Outside of that season, it’s more common to find cuttlefish instead.

– Topped with green seaweed salt – Best enjoyed with a dip in soy sauce

🐠 Sashimi bowl of GOODNESS. It included 5 incredible types of fish:
1. Yellowtail
2. Kingfish
3. Grouper (with half the slices lightly grilled)
4. Bluefin tuna and toro
5. Horse mackerel (half served as a grilled block)

For a total of 7400 yen (just over £35), it was an absolute steal.

When in Hiroshima… you have to try Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki 🇯🇵🔥

But what makes it so special?? Unlike other versions, this one is built in layers - not mixed.
 Crispy base, mountains of cabbage, noodles, egg… all stacked up and cooked right in front of you. It’s simple, but somehow SO good.

📍マルビアン - 20-11 Wakakusacho, Higashi Ward, Hiroshima

With only 12 seats, this tiny bar feels like a proper hidden gem.
 You’re sat front row as your meal is prepped on the hot plate - watching each layer come together, baseball playing in the background, cold beer in hand…

This is the kind of dining experience you don’t forget.

Touched down in Japan and headed straight in with the good stuff ✈️

📍 Ramen Kanetora - Fukuoka 🇯🇵

This is Tsukemen ramen, where the noodles and broth come separately.

🥢 One bowl with thick noodles and egg 🍜 One bowl with an incredibly rich, spicy broth, pork and sauce

You dip the noodles into the broth as you go — and it’s packed with flavour. The broth is seriously thick, but there’s hot water on the table so you can adjust it to your taste.

What we ordered: 🍜 Tsukemen ramen with egg  🥚 Pork & Scramble Egg side with mayo  🍻 Asahi

All for ¥4000 (under £20) for both of us.

Safe to say… Japan is already delivering. 🇯🇵✨

The final coffee stop of our Australian leg & it was golden 🤝 shame we couldn’t stick around for some food! The menu sounded deeeeee-licious.

1. Saw a queue 👀
2. Joined the queue 🤝
3. Waited… and waited… and waited
4. Realised we were queuing for something very good
5. Goods secured 🍪 ✨

This year we are practicing patience… so what better way to practise than seeing in the year with a .my

Moral of the story: if there’s a queue and food involved, it’s probably worth it.

P.s The pistachio Kunafa was next level ❤️
