History Matters: Understanding the Cambodia–Thailand Border Dispute

The modern borders between Cambodia and Thailand were shaped by colonial-era treaties and maps, especially the 1907 French-drawn map that placed Preah Vihear and other ancient temples within Cambodian territory. While Thailand initially accepted and used this map without protest, it later challenged its validity—leading to tensions and territorial disputes. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled in 1962 and again in 2013 that Preah Vihear rightfully belongs to Cambodia, based on legal principles and Thailand’s long-standing acquiescence.

Despite past agreements—including the 2000 MOU to use the 1907 map as a basis for boundary demarcation—Thailand continues to use its own maps to contest established borders. This creates recurring friction and undermines peaceful resolution efforts. In these critical moments, history must guide us—through law, not force.
