The French Embassy An Old Riverside Residence That Still Stands Firm

Back in the days when Siam began opening up to Western influence, many foreign nations established their embassies in Bangkok. A key area was Bang Rak, a district known for its international communities and its convenient location along the Chao Phraya River, where travel by boat was easy. Over time, many embassies relocated to new sites in the city’s business districts. However, two embassies have remained in their original locations: the French Embassy and the Portuguese Embassy.

During the recent European Heritage Week, we had the chance to visit several embassies. Unfortunately, we missed the registration for the Portuguese Embassy, so we visited the French Embassy instead. This marked the first time in years that Western-style heritage buildings in Thailand reopened to visitors after the long pause caused by the pandemic.

The historic building of the French Embassy, which today serves as the ambassador’s residence, is a three-story colonial-style structure with neoclassical elements. It is fronted by a spacious garden that stretches down to its very own pier—making it the only embassy in Bangkok today that has its own private riverside landing. Inside, the spaces are divided for different uses: the ground floor hall, the reception rooms, library, and dining hall for banquets on the second floor, while the third floor remains a private residence for the ambassador and family.

The building was designed with ample ventilation. On the pediment above the second floor, the emblem of the French Republic is prominently displayed. Inside, one finds a collection belonging to the embassy, including porcelain, paintings, prints, and woven textiles. The wooden flooring is especially striking—large, old teak planks far bigger than what is commonly used in houses today.

As a private residence, this historic building of the French Embassy is generally not open to the public. However, in keeping with European tradition, it opens its doors during European Heritage Week each year. For those who missed it this time, the chance will come again next year.

From Mysticism to Modern Craft “WK.Studio” Transforms Belief into Bold Art

Who says beliefs only belong in scriptures? 🙅‍♂️✨ Enter WK.Studio a new-generation Thai artist and craft entrepreneur to watch.

His work is all about transforming traditional wisdom into contemporary designs that are edgy, playful, and infused with a touch of spiritual mystique.

What makes WK.Studio stand out is the way he creates distinctive characters inspired by sacred icons and everyday beliefs from Ganesha, the god of wisdom 🙏, to beckoning cats for fortune 🐱💰, to powerful tigers 🐯 and other divine figures.
Each one is reimagined as home décor objects and unique art toys that instantly spark a “wow”.

Behind every piece lies a meticulous process: it starts with a hand-built prototype, then moves into mold casting. But here’s the twist after casting, many pieces are still hand-finished one by one.

The result works that are “symmetrical yet never identical” are perfectly balanced but never exactly the same. That’s the true charm of authentic craft 👀🔥.

While ceramics 🏺 form the foundation, WK.Studio goes further by blending brass and resin to add new textures and dimensions 💡🎨.

Bold colors, playful detailing, and hidden design surprises 🔍💖 make each piece a storytelling object with its own theme a hit among both craft collectors and art toy enthusiasts.

This is contemporary Thai craftsmanship at its best fearlessly fusing culture with design, reinterpreting tradition for today’s lifestyle 🌍✨.

WK.Studio proves that Thai craft doesn’t belong only in museums. It belongs on collectors’ shelves and in modern homes, as some of the coolest design pieces around. 🌟

Blue Elephant From Bombay Department Store to a Global Ambassador of Thai Cuisine

Standing proudly near Surasak BTS Station, the elegant three-story yellow-and-white colonial mansion of Blue Elephant immediately catches the eye. At first glance—along with the signboard—it’s clear that the building now serves as both a fine dining restaurant and a cooking school specializing in royal Thai cuisine. Yet, with its grand appearance, many locals assume it’s an exclusive place meant only for well-heeled diners and foreign visitors. While that perception is partly true, the building itself, even from the outside, is worth pausing to admire.

Blue Elephant is today one of the most renowned Thai restaurant brands, with branches both in Thailand and abroad. Its very first location was in Brussels, Belgium, where it introduced authentic Thai flavors to international audiences. Later, the brand returned home to Bangkok, opening a restaurant and cooking school in a luxurious colonial building on Sathorn Road—one of the city’s most significant historic landmarks still standing tall amid the modern skyline.

The building that houses the Bangkok branch has a colorful past. Originally known as the Bombay Department Store, it was among the first luxury department stores in Bangkok, founded around 1903. The store offered imported goods from British India and operated for several decades before Chinese entrepreneurs purchased the property and turned it into the headquarters of the Thai-Chinese Chamber of Commerce in the 1930s.

However, that chapter didn’t last long. During World War II, the building was seized by the Japanese army and used as their headquarters in Thailand. After the war, it was returned to the Thai-Chinese Chamber of Commerce, remaining an important community institution. Recognized for its cultural and architectural value, the building was later registered as a national heritage site by the Fine Arts Department.

In 2002, Chef Nooror Somany Steppe and her husband undertook a major restoration project, transforming the mansion into what is now the Blue Elephant Restaurant and Cooking School. The space was carefully divided: the first and second floors became dining halls—lavishly decorated in Thai style, with distinct zones representing Northern Lanna and Central Thailand. The third floor, by contrast, was converted into offices and classrooms for cooking demonstrations and hands-on training.

Today, Blue Elephant Bangkok is more than just a restaurant. It plays a dual role: preserving an architectural treasure and serving as a cultural bridge that introduces Thai cuisine to the world. This effort has earned the building the Outstanding Conservation Award from the Association of Siamese Architects and continues to make Blue Elephant both a heritage landmark and a proud ambassador of Thai flavors on the global stage.

“Phra Tao Benjakhap Yai” – The Enigmatic Coronation Vessel of King Rama I

Among the many sacred rituals of a Thai coronation, none is more profound than the Royal Ablution Ceremony (Song Phra Murathapisek) 🌊✨.

Rooted in Brahmanical tradition, it is believed that only through this ritual bathing with consecrated water does a prince truly transform into a sovereign king 📜👑.

One of the most fascinating regalia of this ceremony is the “Phra Tao Benjakhap Yai” (pronounced Ben-ja-khap) sometimes written as Benjakhraph 🏺💎.

This sacred vessel holds the holy water of Buddhist and Brahmanical chants, presented exclusively to the monarch. It is not only used in coronations but also during royal birthdays and other state ceremonies of immense importance.

👑 What makes this vessel truly extraordinary is its exclusivity: no member of the royal family may partake of its water unless it is personally bestowed by the King’s own hand.

The Phra Tao Benjakhap Yai is classified among the Coronation Regalia, placed upon the Coronation Platform. Over time, new versions were crafted, including the Benjakhap Rong (King Rama IV) and the Benjakhap Five-Chambered Vessel (King Rama IV).

🔮 The intrigue lies in its name, Benjakhap (Fivefold Vessel). Contrary to popular belief, it does not refer to its external form or compartments. Instead, at its base lie five golden yantra-inscribed discs, immersed within the water each a talisman of immense sanctity.

King Rama IV later commissioned a new vessel, designed to reflect its name more literally: it featured a Noppagao flower motif 🌸 at its center, supported by five extending legs symbolizing the Five Kings, representing majesty and auspicious power.

💛 The original Phra Tao Benjakhap Yai is a masterpiece of divine beauty carved entirely from yellow agate, its lid and body adorned with diamonds and rubies, shimmering like a celestial chalice from the heavens.

📦 Even more astonishing is its origin. This vessel was not crafted in Siam but acquired from abroad during the reign of King Rama I, alongside other regalia. King Rama V once remarked in awe:

“It is indeed wondrous. At a time when the kingdom was unsettled, how could objects of such beauty and immense value have found their way to Bangkok?”

Thus, the Phra Tao Benjakhap Yai is not merely a ceremonial object but a symbol of cultural exchange, global trade, and the projection of Siam’s royal power during the dawn of the Rattanakosin era 🌏✨.

Kuden Mansion: Discovering Southerner in Satun’s Historic Mansion

Southern Thailand is known as a hub for Western-style architecture. Across provinces such as Trang, Phuket, Ranong, and Songkhla, you can find buildings influenced by Western design. Satun is no exception, and one of its most iconic Western-style buildings is Kuden Mansion, also known as the Satun National Museum.

Kuden Mansion is a two-story Western-style mansion, but unlike many other buildings in the South that blend Chinese and Western influences, this mansion uniquely combines Western design with Muslim artistry, most notably through its star-shaped ventilation openings. The building is over a century old and is considered possibly the oldest in Satun.

The mansion originally belonged to Phraya Phuminat Phakdi (Tunku Baharuddin bin Tammangong, also known as Kuden bin Kumae), the governor of Satun during the reign of King Rama V. It was initially built as a residence for the king’s visits but was never used for that purpose. Over time, it was repurposed as a private residence and later as the Satun city hall. Eventually, it was declared a historical site and now serves as the Satun National Museum. Inside, visitors can explore exhibitions on Satun’s history, way of life, culture, as well as various artifacts and artworks discovered in the province.

Ao Thaled Wooden Bridge: Pink Dolphins and the Gateway to the Gulf of Thailand

Bridges have long been more than just functional structures—they often become landmarks and popular check-in spots for travelers. Some are grand and modern, while others are simple yet scenic, like the charming Ao Thaled Wooden Bridge in Khanom District, Nakhon Si Thammarat.

Stretching more than 100 meters out into the sea, this wooden bridge at Ao Thaled in Thong Nian Subdistrict offers more than just a walkway. It provides visitors with sweeping 360-degree views of the surrounding landscape: lush mangroves, mountain ranges, and the endless expanse of turquoise waters.

But what truly makes the Ao Thaled Wooden Bridge special is its role as the starting point for dolphin-watching tours. From here, travelers embark on boat trips to see the rare pink dolphins that inhabit the waters off Khanom—one of the most important habitats for this unique marine species in Thailand. These tours are often led by local community enterprises, combining ecotourism with conservation awareness.

For this reason, Ao Thaled and its wooden bridge are more than just tourist attractions. They are an open-air classroom of nature, offering lessons on marine biodiversity, the fishing community’s way of life, and the importance of conserving natural resources for future generations.

Contemporary Benjarong – “Tam Hoop Din Pao” Thailand’s First Ceramic Tile Art from Maha Sarakham.

Who says Benjarong belongs only on bowls and plates? Maha Sarakham proudly presents contemporary Benjarong, a unique art form brought to life on earthenware tiles 🏺.

Meet the visionary behind this artistic innovation, “Wirat Thaikrainet”, the artist and founder of Ban Benjarong Gallery, who transforms ceramic tiles into breathtaking works of art.

Contemporary Benjarong painting combines traditional techniques with modern concepts, blending artistry and craftsmanship to create one-of-a-kind masterpieces under the name “Tam Hoop Din Pao”

🎭 Where It All Began
This creative movement started in Khok Phra Subdistrict, Kantharawichai District, at Ban Benjarong Gallery – the first pioneer in ceramic tile painting in Thailand ✨.

These works don’t just dazzle the eye; they tell the story of Isan traditions and culture, from Bun Bang Fai rocket festivals, candle parades, Loy Krathong, to familiar Thai folk games 💃.

🌸 Highlight: “Sroi Dok Mak” Pattern 🌸
Maha Sarakham’s signature silk motif is beautifully adapted for ceramic tiles. From silk cloth to Benjarong tiles, this is a stunning contemporary continuation of traditional wisdom that leaves every viewer in awe.

🔥 The Art Behind the Tiles
Each piece is hand-painted and kiln-fired at 730–830°C, ensuring that the beauty endures while remaining durable and long-lasting ✨.

However, this art form faces a critical challenge: fewer young artisans are carrying it forward. That’s why the “Tam Hoop Din Pao” project exists – to raise awareness, revive interest, and ensure the legacy of this unique craft continues 💖🎨✨.

💡 Art as Cultural Power
Art is more than beauty; it is the heartbeat of culture, inspiring new generations. Who would have thought that tiles and Benjarong could evolve into contemporary masterpieces while keeping the cultural roots alive?

Phu Langka: The Magical Sea of fog in Phayao

Phu Langka Forest Park (not to be confused with Phu Langka National Park) is one of Phayao’s hidden natural treasures. While Phayao may not be the most popular tourist destination, this forest park stands out as one of the province’s iconic attractions.

Phu Langka is renowned as one of the best viewpoints for the sea of fog. The park is located in Chang Noi Subdistrict, Pong District, Phayao Province. It sits on the rugged ridges of the San Pan Nam Mountain Range, with elevations ranging from 900 to 1,720 meters. The Royal Forest Department officially declared it a forest park on May 8, 2002.

The park offers a fascinating 3-kilometer nature trail. The trail begins at the “Nature Classroom,” which features a herbal garden, an orchid garden, and a collection of rare plants. It continues through an ancient forest rich in bird species—perfect for birdwatching—before leading to a meadow where wildflowers bloom in late rainy season and early winter. Along the way, visitors encounter several key viewpoints:

-Doi Hua Ling – Famous for its beautiful sunsets and morning sea of mist.

-Phu Nom – A ridge at about 1,600 meters high, offering breathtaking 360-degree panoramic views.

-Phu Langka Peak – The highest point at 1,720 meters, where the sea of mist can be admired in all its glory.

Besides the main summit, other highlights include the Million-Year Stone Field, just 100 meters from the peak, and Phu Langka Waterfall—a small but charming cascade especially picturesque during the rainy season. Another must-visit is Magic Mountain Café, a well-known spot nearby where travelers gather to enjoy the sunrise over a sea of mist, best seen between 6:30–8:30 AM as the sunlight gently illuminates the valley.

Although winter is the peak season for mist-viewing, the rainy season has its own charm. After rainfall, seas of mist often appear, and there are fewer crowds compared to winter, making the experience more peaceful. This makes Phu Langka Forest Park a worthwhile destination in both the rainy and winter seasons.

An ancient wisdom that’s still alive ready to be touched with your own hands.

From local tradition to creative tourism, the “Barai Mud-Dyed Textile” ✨ is a living heritage born from handwoven silk and natural dyeing techniques 🌿🌸.

Barks, blossoms, leaves, fruits, even lac resin are transformed into delicate, earthy shades found nowhere else.

In Ban Khok Mueang, Prakhon Chai District, Buriram, the community carries a timeless bond with the Muang Tam Stone Sanctuary. Their identity is woven into textiles, most notably the Pak Kud fern pattern, adapted from the motifs carved into the temple’s ancient sandstone pillars.

In recent years, the community has gone a step further reviving the use of clay from the centuries-old barai (ancient reservoir). When this sacred mud meets handwoven cloth, it not only enriches the colors but also makes the fabric softer than ever before.

✨ One highlight for visitors: the chance to create your own natural tie-dye masterpiece. Start with a plain white cloth, fold and bind it with clips in the playful “sandwich method” to form unique patterns 🎨.

The tighter your knots, the bolder the design 😍. Dip it into simmering dye, fragrant with local plants, then immerse it in the precious barai mud, the true “heart” of this craft. The mud softens the fibers, locks in the colors, and turns every piece into something irresistibly smooth and long-lasting.

⏳ The most thrilling moment comes when the bindings are finally removed: the hidden design is revealed, an unrepeatable one-of-a-kind artwork your own signature textile 💝.

From chic scarves 🧣 to cozy shawls and thoughtful souvenirs, these mud-dyed fabrics carry not just beauty but a story woven from heritage, nature, and imagination.

Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden - Thailand’s First International-Standard Botanical Garden

In addition to the Royal Park Rajapruek, Chiang Mai is also home to another botanical treasure: the Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden in Mae Rim District—the very first international-standard botanical garden in Thailand.

The garden was established in 1992, marking the auspicious 60th birthday of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother. Originally named Mae Sa Botanic Garden, it was graciously granted permission in 1994 to bear Her Majesty’s name. Spanning an impressive 6,500 rai (over 1,000 hectares), the garden is managed according to international standards and is currently under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.

One of the garden’s most remarkable highlights is the Canopy Walkway—Thailand’s longest treetop walkway. Stretching over 500 meters and elevated more than 20 meters above the ground, it offers visitors a panoramic view of the lush mountainside and a unique chance to observe forest ecosystems from above. The garden is also home to Thailand’s largest greenhouse complex, showcasing an incredible diversity of plant species, each carefully displayed in climates that mimic their natural habitats.

The garden features a wide range of nature trails:
-Arboretum Trail – a 600-meter walk among diverse tree species.
-Vine Trail – an 800-meter path with over 250 species of climbing plants.
-Ginger Garden – displaying more than 180 species of gingers and related plants found in Thailand.
-Banana Avenue – the largest collection of banana species in Northern Thailand.

Beyond its scenic landscapes, the garden also houses an Organic Agriculture Center, where visitors can learn about sustainable farming practices and watch demonstrations on growing vegetables and herbs. For nature lovers, the Mae Sa Noi Waterfall, which flows year-round within the garden, adds a refreshing touch to the tranquil atmosphere.

With its combination of scientific value, natural beauty, and serene environment, Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden is not only a place to learn and explore but also a true sanctuary for relaxation and rejuvenation.

“PLEARN” – The Joy of Coconut, Herbs, and Community Smiles.

Who would have thought that the humble coconut, grown in abundance in Samut Songkhram’s lush orchards 🌊🌴, would become the beating heart of a wellness and beauty brand?

PLEARN is more than just the soft, delicate scent of coconut. It’s about passing on happiness to those who use the products, and to the very community that creates them. 🍃😊

🌟 From Crisis to Opportunity
Back in 2010, coconut prices plummeted, leaving local farmers struggling. 💔 In response, the Ruean Samut Community Enterprise came together, experimenting until they perfected their signature cold-pressed coconut oil fragrant, pure, and distinct. The result quickly won hearts both in Thailand and overseas. 🌍✨

🌿 From Coconut Oil to Herbal Beauty
But the journey didn’t stop there. Seeing greater potential, the group expanded into herbal cosmetics 🌴💄lotions, creams, soaps, shampoos, hair serums, and even body scrubs.

Their star product coconut oil infused with Centella asiatica 🍃, known for its skin-repairing properties won the OTOP 5-star award in 2011 🏆.

This milestone established PLEARN as a proud player in Thailand’s beauty industry.

🎨 Simple Design, Naturally Memorable
Though some said its logo and packaging looked “too plain,” the minimalist design actually matched perfectly with its natural essence 🌱 and the gentle fragrance of coconut in a clear bottle 🍶.

This wasn’t an oversight but a deliberate choice a strategy that made the brand instantly recognizable. That quiet charm has kept PLEARN thriving for more than a decade. 💚

Today, PLEARN has over 50 members from retired aunties and fresh graduates to locals once unemployed. Everyone has a role in the production house 🏭✨, whether in crafting, bottling, or distribution.

🌍 From Coconut Groves to Airports
Now, PLEARN products aren’t just sold online. They’ve ranked among the Top 10 OTOP bestsellers at airports ✈️, a gateway to the world.

The brand is also reaching new international markets, with an ambitious vision to become a hub for Thai herbal wellness, strong enough to stand alongside national players. 🌿💎

At its core, PLEARN is not simply about selling. It’s about building a brand so strong that the products speak for themselves. With new launches every year, constant innovation, and unwavering dedication to community values, PLEARN continues to harness local wisdom, drive sustainable growth, and spread joy to everyone along the way. 🌸🌱
