Gurdwaras: Abodes of the Guru is painted entirely in watercolour.

In 2021, when the world was still half shut, Allan Quesada () made an unusual request. As he began bringing these sacred spaces to life, he asked Roopinder Singh (Roopinder Singh's Books) for water from the Sarovar of the Harmandir Sahib. Not as a relic. Not for display. But to paint with.

In his Manila studio, that water was folded into the very pigments that move across these pages. This was not symbolism. It was devotion. A conviction that the act of creation must be as sacred as what it seeks to honour.

Shown here is Allan Quesada’s interpretation of the frescoes within Gurdwara Baba Atal Sahib in Amritsar, India.

Dr. Manmohan Singh had graciously written the foreword to the book months before his passing, making this moment one of profound remembrance, grace, and legacy.

Gurdwaras: Abodes of the Guru is available worldwide at leading bookstores, with copies arriving across India in the coming weeks.

In the langar hall, no one is above another. Here, sewa, selfless service, is practiced not as charity, but as duty.

Hands cook, serve, clean, and sit beside one another, dissolving rank, wealth, and ego. This is equality made visible, nourishment offered with humility, and faith expressed through action.

From Gurdwaras: Abodes of the Guru. A book by Roopinder Singh with illustrations by Allan Quesada.

From the first wash to the final layer of watercolor, each detail captures the vibrant spirit of Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha, Bangkok, the spiritual and cultural anchor of Thailand’s Sikh community since 1911. Standing along Chakkraphet Road near the Old Siam district, this six-storey gurdwara reflects the journey of the early Sikh migrants from Gujranwala, Sheikhupura, and Sialkot who arrived as humble traders and peddlers and went on to build one of Southeast Asia’s most prominent Sikh institutions.

The original building was completed in 1932, and during World War II it became a refuge for many Sikhs when two bombs struck the structure but miraculously failed to detonate. In 1979 the sangat resolved to rebuild, creating the present complex with its grand darbar hall, golden palki, marble platform, arched windows, and a langar that feeds hundreds every single day.

The gurdwara also houses a free clinic that has served the needy for more than five decades, a school for Thai Sikh children, and halls that welcome weddings, lectures, meetings, and visitors from around the world. With 84 steps leading up to the parkash asthan and daily ceremonies beginning at 4.30 in the morning, this is a sanctuary shaped by seva, discipline, and devotion.

From the first sketch to the final layer of watercolor, each brushstroke pays homage to Gurdwara Hemkund Sahib, the breathtaking sanctuary perched 15,210 feet above sea level in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand. Surrounded by seven snow-clad peaks, the crystal-clear Hemkund Lake mirrors the gurdwara’s lotus-inspired architecture — a design that embodies the Sikh virtues of purity, humility, and divine reflection.

Identified by the Nirmala scholar Pandit Tara Chand Narotam as the site where Guru Gobind Singh Ji meditated in a previous birth, Hemkund Sahib was brought to life in 1934 through the devotion of Bhai Sohan Singh, a former army Granthi. The gurdwara’s modern form, completed in the 1970s under architect Manmohan Singh Siali with guidance from Major-General Harkirat Singh, was inspired by Gurbani to resemble “a jewel that covered Guru Granth Sahib.”

Today, pilgrims traverse steep mountain paths and glaciers to reach this sacred refuge, accessible only three months a year, where the sound of kirtan drifts through the thin mountain air and the lake reflects both heaven and the Nishan Sahib above it.

Featured in Gurdwaras: Abodes of the Guru by Roopinder Singh with illustrations by Allan Quesada, this artwork is a tribute to endurance, devotion, and the timeless light that guides every pilgrim’s ascent.

Each stage from the first sketch to the final layer of watercolor reveals the soul of Gurdwara Janam Asthan, the sacred birthplace of Guru Nanak Dev Ji in Nankana Sahib, Pakistan. This revered shrine marks where the Guru’s divine journey began, and where his timeless message of unity, equality, and compassion first illuminated the world.

Roopinder Singh’s Gurdwaras: Abodes of the Guru, illustrated by Allan Quesada, features this artwork, which embodies how faith, art, and history come together one brushstroke at a time.
