Landscape architecture is of vital importance for our quality of life. The fact of the matter is we are craving outdoor time now more than ever.
It was a pleasure speaking with Attaporn Kobkongsanti of TROP: Terrains + Open Space. We tapped into his experience and expertise to learn something new. In his view, landscaping is much more than part of a larger whole. It’s the process of making an outdoor space surrounding a building more attractive, meantime, fostering a strong relationship with our home and improving overall living conditions.

“The importance of nature has been deeply tied to our DNA since the dawn of time. Primitive cave paintings tell the story of human-nature relationship. They are powerful reflections of early societies that saw nature as sacred kin. Things have changed. A modern era of separation has led to environmental crises that create immense pressure on our lives both physically and mentally. Reconnecting with nature offers vast benefits.
“Mother Nature has all the healing power we need. You may not be able to afford a house with expansive grounds. Nor do you have unlimited budget. But having access to a good life is entirely possible regardless of the size of your residence. Having a small garden allows you to maximize outdoor space for beauty and function. You may not have a private home swimming pool. That’s not a problem. Communal spaces with gardens, footpaths and jogging trails in housing developments come in handy to offer key components of a fulfilling life, ultimately enhancing quality of life in the city.”

“The proportion of the house to the landscape must strike the right balance with the homeowners’ lifestyle needs. There are no definite rules. Rather, it depends entirely on how a family lives. Before I do anything, I need to understand their daily life, routines and preferred spaces. Only then will I be able to create the kind of landscape that fits.
“In the case of a well-to-do family with little outdoor time, the emphasis is placed on enhancing the visual impact by creating a landscape that can be seen in full view from inside. But for those who love the outdoors, they want more green spaces to stay connected with nature. As for introverts who focus on their inner world, a garden oasis around the house provides mental and physical health benefits. A good life is achievable even with limited space, whether it be a single-level home, a two-level house, or an apartment unit. We’ll find ways to integrate greenery into your home.”

“Trees are vital to us. They provide the canopy blocking sunlight, regulating temperature, and protecting us from unhealthy levels of PM2.5 pollution. Their roots benefit topsoil by improving its structure. Our ancestors used to say that planting trees was a powerful good deed, offering immense environmental benefits. Trees provide essential food and shelter for countless animals. In other words, we create habitats for other living organisms, too.
“Well-thought-out landscape design helps us reconnect with nature. Seeing and spending time in green spaces provides a calming escape from urban color and noise that significantly impact our mental health. Green spaces bring relaxation. Japanese people enjoy a small environment that they call ‘Niwa’, referring to a thought garden used for reflecting on experiences. It’s amazing how nature heals.
“There is a common human tendency to take things for granted until they’re gone. After a long day at work, we commute back home getting stuck in heavy traffic and PM2.5 pollution along the way. It’s crucial to decompress and we rely on nature to transition out of work mode. Precisely that’s where landscape architecture comes in to enhance our mental and physical health.”

“Your home is a place you have control over. It’s your life background. It speaks to both sadness and joy that are inseparable parts of the human experience. Your living space is where your children grow into responsible adults. As family, you share a deep desire in well-being and that’s what matters most for your children.”
