Chapter VIII: Bhīshma the Noble

This chapter explores the sacrifice that shaped the future of the Kuru dynasty.

It recounts the return of Devavrata—the eighth son of King Shāntanu and the goddess Gangā—who has grown into a peerless warrior raised by the Devas.

The story follows Shāntanu's unexpected romance with the ferrywoman Satyavatī and the impossible condition demanded for her hand in marriage.

To secure his father's happiness, Devavrata makes an ultimate, terrifying vow that earns him the immortal name 'Bhīshma', forever altering the course of the Mahābhārata.

Devavrata took a deep breath and promised that he would resign from the position of Yuvarāja voluntarily so that the king could accept the term.

Dāsharāja was delighted and admired his generosity but still worried about one thing.

The prince was noble and generous, but what about his sons? If they claimed their rights in the future, what would happen to the children of Satyavatī?

Devavrata then stepped out and declared an oath to heaven and earth. Besides renouncing his right to the throne, he also shall not marry and remain celibate for all his life.

Once the Devas and the entire world listened to this dreadful oath, they became terrified, chanting an unearthly voice throughout the sky, “Bhīshma! Bhīshma (awe)!” and showered a rain of flowers on Devavrata.

Chapter VI: Gangā the River Goddess

This chapter traces the epic descent of the celestial river and the divine curse that reshaped the destiny of kings.

It introduces the tragic lineage of King Sagara, the absolute wrath of Maharishi Kapila that reduced 60,000 princes to ash, and the centuries of penance that finally brought the goddess Gangā down to earth through the matted locks of Lord Shiva.

The narrative weaves a chain of cause and effect (Pratītyasamutpāda)—unveiling the hidden celestial romance between Gangā and Mahābhisha, and the merciful secret behind the drowning of the seven infants.

Suddenly, Vāyu, the god of wind, breezed through the hall; her delicate garment shifted, momentarily exposing a glimpse of her bare skin.

While every god and sage instantly averted their eyes out of respect, Mahābhisha remained transfixed, gazing upon her with eyes burning with mortal desire, and Gangā offered a receptive smile in return.

Witnessing this flash of earthly romance within his holy court, Brahmā grew incensed by their shameful conduct.

He struck them both with a severe curse: they were condemned to be reborn as mortals upon the earth, where they would be joined in marriage, only to be violently torn apart to suffer the agony of broken hearts.

Chapter IV: Bharata the Great

This chapter chronicles the lineage of the proud Bhārata dynasty, tracing the shifting tides of mortal ambition and divine destiny.

It introduces Emperor Bharata, the righteous Chakravartin whose namesakes would forever define the geography and identity of the land.

From the tragic slaughter of Bharata's nine princes that leaves him childless, to the tempestuous birth of the sage Bharadvāja, the founding of Hastināpura, and a divine romance with the goddess Tapatī that ultimately gives birth to Kuru and the proud legacy of the Kauravas.

Driven to a frenzy of rage by his rejection, the mothers slaughtered all nine princes, leaving Bharata entirely childless.

As the emperor grew older, the desperate need for a suitable successor to the throne weighed heavily upon him.

Ultimately, he resolved to seek the spiritual aid of the great sage Bharadvāja, a man who possessed an extraordinary and tempestuous birth.

Through the divine grace and intercession of Bharadvāja, Emperor Bharata performed a magnificent Yajna, which rewarded him with a son born directly from the sacred sacrificial fire, named Bhumanyu.

With the succession secured, Bharata appointed Bhumanyu as the new king and, when the proper time came, retired into the deep forest to live out his days as a Vānaprastha.

Chapter II: Vishvāmitra the Defiant

The story traces the fierce, centuries-long rivalry between King Vishvaratha and the Brahmarishi Vasishtha. Driven by humiliation after his royal army was routed by the spiritual power of Vasishtha's divine cow, Nandinī, the king renounces his throne to become a Rajarishi. Through centuries of severe, ego-driven penances, his defiance leads him to alter the fates of kings, construct a parallel universe in outer space, and endure the seductive traps of the heavens—all in a relentless pursuit to prove that a Kshatriya's determination can match the absolute power of a Brahmin.

Terrified of a living Chandala entering heaven, Indra violently hurled the king back down. Vishvaratha arrested the fall with his ascetic power, suspending Trishanku upside down in mid-air.

As a cosmic tug-of-war ensued, the defiant sage began manufacturing an entirely new parallel universe, complete with its own stars, planets, and rival pantheon of Devas. To prevent total cosmic disruption, Brihaspati begged the sage to cease, agreeing to a compromise where this newly forged heaven would belong exclusively to Trishanku until the end of the Kalpa.

To this very day, whenever one gazes up at the southern sky, one can see Trishanku’s Heaven hanging in the stars.

Chapter I: Vasishtha the Holy

The epic begins by establishing the vast scale of Hindu cosmology and the eternal cycle of time. It introduces Brahmā's mind-born sages (Brahmarishis), the churning of the milk ocean (Samudra Manthan), and the divine wish-granting cow, Nandinī. The central conflict of this chapter arises when the Ashtavasus (the eight elemental deities) invoke the righteous anger of the holy sage Vasishtha, triggering a curse that sets the entire Mahābhārata into motion.

When Vasishtha returned to his ashram and found no sign of Nandinī, he grew suspicious. Tuning into his yogic vision, he witnessed the theft clearly. Shaking his head in righteous anger, he cursed the Vasus to be reborn as mere mortals on earth, forcing them to suffer a human stain as punishment for stealing a Brahmin's property.

Realising they had been caught red-handed, the Vasus instantly lost their divine glow and fell from the heavens. Terrified of the curse, they hurriedly returned Nandinī and begged the Brahmarishi for forgiveness.

Though Vasishtha was a man of love and mercy, a curse once spoken can never be recalled. He relented slightly, allowing seven of them to be born on earth for only a brief moment before returning to heaven. However, Prabhāsa—the mastermind behind the theft—was condemned to suffer a mortal's fate for the full length of a human life.

Introduction: The Mahābhārata Zayplay Edition

The Mahābhārata needs no introduction. As one of the greatest epics in human history, its legacy is universally recognised.

This project is inspired by a series of character illustrations created back in 2012. After being put on hold due to professional commitments, this long-awaited work is finally complete, featuring a total of 147 illustrations, including those that have never been published anywhere before.

Regarding the creation process, this edition utilises AI technology for initial translation (not illustrations). However, the comprehensive rewriting, structural arrangement, and meticulous refinement of the prose are entirely driven by human intellect and effort. In crafting this adaptation, my role functions more as an editor than a conventional author, ensuring that every narrative choice aligns with the core vision of the project.

The project is split into three distinct volumes, totally containing 144 chapters:

Volume 1: Book of the City This volume covers parts of the original epic from the Ādiparva to the Sabhāparva, detailing the origins of the royal lineage, the Brahmin ancestry, and the foundational causes of all subsequent conflicts. (48 chapters)

Volume 2: Book of the Forest This volume covers parts of the original epic from the Vanaparva to the Udyogaparva, incorporating the ancient legends and lore heard by the Pāndavas during their thirteen-year exile. (48 chapters)

Volume 3: Book of the Battlefield This volume covers parts of the original epic from the Bhīshmaparva to the Svargārohanaparva, dealing with the cataclysmic Kurukshetra War and the events leading to its conclusion, which marks the true beginning of the Mahābhārata epic. (48 chapters)

The Mahābhārata: Zayplay Edition is a curated compilation of stories from the Itihāsa, the Purānas, Kathā, Kāvya, and related classical literature. It differs from the canonical text to deliver a concise, descriptive narrative without dialogue, keeping the storytelling sharp and accessible.

At its core, this edition serves as a profound illustration of Pratītyasamutpāda (Dependent Origination). Every character is inextricably linked, their lives moving and bound by the laws of karma. As Pānini defined 'anuvāda' as 'repetition by way of explanation, illustration, or corroboration'—this book is, in that truest sense, an Anuvāda of the Mahābhārata.

Moving forward, this page will share select previews from across all three volumes. Rather than posting full chapters in sequential order, the content will skip back and forth, presenting a specific illustration alongside a short context and an excerpt from that chapter.
