My dear friend Mitch sent me a playlist because he has such a broad range of music that I am constantly discovering and rediscovering music from him. I was playing a recent playlist he sent me and it had this glorious song, a favorite of mineâ€Ķit was both written and sang by Clint Conley, co-founder, bassist and vocalist for the LEGENDARY band Mission of Burma, who were active briefly from 1979-1983â€Ķ

They were name checked by Pixies, Foo Fighters, Guided By Voices, Sugar, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, HÞsker DÞ, Fugazi, Shellacâ€Ķthe mark they left, absolutely undeniableâ€Ķ

But here’s my best Clint Conley storyâ€Ķ

Back in 2005 I saw this documentary called Tibet: Cry of the Snow Lionâ€ĶI was outraged. So many stories. What could I do? How could I help? I started looking up Tibet organizations in California. Somehow I ended up on a phone call with a force of a woman named Dr. Dorothy Berger, who was co-chair of the International Tibet Support Network, an umbrella network for several Tibet support organizations including the Richard Gere Foundation and Beastie Boys MCA’s Milarepa Fund.

She told me of a program helping fund scholarships for Tibetan children escaping the country by traversing the Himalayas on footâ€Ķsome as young as seven years oldâ€Ķwithout adultsâ€Ķsent away by their parents into India knowing they may never see each other again. I was horrified. How could I help? How could I raise money?

Been thinking a lot about the state of the worldâ€Ķ.most excellent cover from of a most poignant song by

23/05/2026

glasvegas’s cover of miss polly jean harvey’s haunting song came on shuffle and i was remarking to Anuj over at about how good the cover isâ€Ķ and how good the original isâ€Ķ there was no proper video of glasvegas performing this that i could find, so i stitched together a little something for the songâ€Ķ both songs carry this strange ache to themâ€Ķ also worth notingâ€Ķ PJ Harvey credited the repeated line: “What if I take my problem to the United Nations?” as being inspired by Eddie Cochran’s Summertime Bluesâ€Ķ one of those tiny musical breadcrumbs connecting generations of unrest togetherâ€Ķ written by Polly Jean Harveyâ€Ķ performed here by Glasvegasâ€Ķ

If you’ve never listened to Low Voltsâ€Ķyou really shouldâ€Ķ

Tim Lowman — formerly of The Blackout Party — created this incredible one-man wall of fuzzed-out dirty blues, rock, soul, slide guitar, kick drums, tambourines and pure atmosphere that somehow felt both massive and deeply intimate at the same timeâ€Ķ

We lost Tim toward the end of last yearâ€Ķ and while this reel shares a few stories that always make me smile, I also wanted to share a few photographs and encourage people to explore the music he left behindâ€Ķ

Start anywhere and just wanderâ€ĶTim will haunt you through an amplifierâ€Ķ

â€Ē Twist Shake Grind Break
â€Ē Rome With You
â€Ē Oh My Stars
â€Ē Forbidden Frequency

Four albumsâ€Ķ numerous singlesâ€Ķ and a genuinely unique voice in the San Diego music sceneâ€Ķ

There are artists you listen to, and there are artists that create a whole atmosphere around themselves. Tim absolutely did the latterâ€Ķplus, it’s hard to find a single soul who had a bad word to say of himâ€Ķ

Give it some earâ€Ķ

In loving memory of ðŸŦķðŸ–ĪðŸŦ°

Anuj ( IG) and I were sitting around talking about how streaming platforms are getting flooded with AI-generated musicâ€Ķ

and how hard it’s becoming for indie artists to even be heard anymore. Someone told me almost 100,000 new songs are added to Spotify every single day, which is kind of mind-melting. Like trying to scream into a hurricane while holding a cassette tapeâ€Ķ

Between Anuj and me, our communities reach a little over 50 million views a month on IGâ€Ķ and we started asking ourselves — how can we use that reach to actually help people? S

So we came up with an ideaâ€Ķ

why not build an ongoing indie community playlist?

A place where artists in our community can send us their music, and we just keep adding to it over timeâ€Ķ almost like a weird little indie radio station. Something people can throw on shuffle while driving, cleaning, spiraling existentially at 2am, whatever worksâ€Ķ

The idea isn’t “go viral.” The idea is discovery.

when you shrink the space down from millions upon millions of songs to an actual community of people who genuinely love music, maybe your song has a better chance of landing in somebody’s ears who really needed to hear it.

If somebody likes it, rad.
If they don’t, they skip.
That’s musicâ€Ķ

But maybe somebody discovers their new favorite artist because of it.

So indie artistsâ€Ķ
DM your singles to Sayonara Cupcake ðŸŦķ

(please don’t send them to Legends of Musicâ€Ķ Anuj gets absolutely flooded with messages daily and there’s a good chance your music may disappear somewhere into the digital abyss before he even sees itâ€Ķ) and don’t panic if I don’t immediately respond because im not online alwaysâ€Ķregardless of genre, we’re happy to add you!

For the last videos the evening for those following down the rabbit hole today — we skip back to the beginning and Nick Sanderson — even after he was in the bands I’d referenced earlier, he was ALSO playing with JAMCâ€Ķ.

So here’s the Jesus and Mary Chain, sans Nick, and the second ever Lollapaloozaâ€Ķ.the first Lollapalooza was initially supposed to be a farewell tour for Jane’s Addictionâ€Ķ.so in a weird way, the second Lollapalooza almost feels like the first real oneâ€Ķ.

And what an absolutely absurd lineupâ€Ķ.

Red Hot Chili Peppersâ€Ķ.Pearl Jamâ€Ķ.Soundgardenâ€Ķ.Ministryâ€Ķ.Ice Cubeâ€Ķ.The Jesus and Mary Chainâ€Ķ.Lushâ€Ķ.

1992 Lollapalooza was ridiculously stackedâ€Ķ.

here’s The Jesus and Mary Chain performing on 18 july 1992 at Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, Californiaâ€Ķ.performing the song that got them banned from the BBCâ€Ķ.“Reverence”â€Ķ.

i KNOW there have to be people out there that were at this showâ€Ķ.

please comment and share your memoriesâ€Ķ..

for those that have gone down the rabbit hole with me today/tonightâ€Ķ.the next stop circles back to the catalyst Gun Club video which featured Kid Congo Powersâ€Ķ.this time he’s found some Pink Monkey Birdsâ€Ķ.

i LOVE watching performances of kid congo powers because he seems so genuinely happy in his elementâ€Ķ.and that energy transfers directly into the soundâ€Ķ.even if he’s singing about stuff he doesn’t like, it’s done in such a sassy pu***ss way that it still makes me smileâ€Ķ.

this performance was filmed live on KEXP in 2014â€Ķ.and the song is called “I Don’t Like”â€Ķ

KCP has had one of the wildest rÃĐsumÃĐs in underground music historyâ€Ķ.The Gun Clubâ€Ķ.The Crampsâ€Ķ.Nick Cave and the Bad Seedsâ€Ķlike what a f’in badassâ€Ķ.maybe I need to go down those rabbit holes tomorrowâ€Ķ

if you’re still following along tonight down my rabbit holeâ€Ķ.the third video in this series is a band called Freeheatâ€Ķ.

Freeheat consisted of jim reid and ben lurie from The Jesus and Mary Chainâ€Ķ.romi mori from The Romi Mori Band and The Gun Clubâ€Ķ.and nick sanderson, also of The Jesus and Mary Chain and The Gun Clubâ€Ķ.who also ties directly into the fourth band i’ll be dragging into this rabbit hole nextâ€Ķ.

i’m not really sure exactly when this video was filmed because the uploader didn’t specifyâ€Ķ.but Freeheat existed during that in-between time after The Jesus and Mary Chain broke up the first timeâ€Ķ.so somewhere between 2000 and 2006 i’d imagineâ€Ķ.

which makes this footage even cooler to meâ€Ķ.because it captures one of those strange transitional moments in underground music history where musicians you already loved from different projects all briefly collided together before splintering off again into other thingsâ€Ķ.

so if you’re following me down the rabbit hole from my last reel, which posted my favorite iteration of The Gun Club, you’ll notice that romi mori was in the bandâ€Ķ.

romi would also have her own project, The Romi Mori Bandâ€Ķ.this video was uploaded to youtube back in 2016â€Ķ.i don’t know exactly where it was filmed, but the reason i chose to post it is because this is EXACTLY how japan consumes a lot of musicâ€Ķ.tiny basement clubsâ€Ķ.super loudâ€Ķ.you leave barely able to hear afterwardsâ€Ķ.but manâ€Ķ.you’re THEREâ€Ķ.

they are punk AFâ€Ķ.

it’s electricâ€Ķ.it’s intimateâ€Ķ.it’s sweatyâ€Ķ.it’s aliveâ€Ķ.

some of my favorite music experiences ever have happened in tiny japanese clubs where it feels like the entire room is collectively levitating from the energyâ€Ķ.

so since a lot of people won’t ever get to experience that firsthandâ€Ķ.here’s the next best thingâ€Ķ.

stick aroundâ€Ķ.there’s gonna be more tonightâ€Ķ

i saw a story come up the other day regarding Jeffrey Lee Pierce so it made me think of The Gun Clubâ€Ķ

there were different iterations of the Gun Club, but i think my favorite was with Jeffrey Lee Pierce, Kid Congo Powers, Romi Mori, and Nick Sandersonâ€Ķ

there is a long and wonderful rabbit hole to go down with the Gun Clubâ€Ķpunk, blues, psychobilly, swamp rock, no wave grime, old american ghosts rattling around in the wallsâ€Ķone of those bands where if they click with you, they really click with youâ€Ķ

so here is the Gun Club in Los Angeles, 1988, performing “She’s Like He**in to Me”â€Ķ
