🇨🇳 Annexation vs. Occupation: What Happened in Tibet?

When people say “China annexed Tibet,” it’s worth understanding what that really means — because annexation and occupation are not the same thing.

⚔️ Occupation means a country’s military takes control of a territory by force, without it becoming an official part of that country. It’s a de facto (actual) control, often temporary and not legally recognized.

🏴 Annexation, on the other hand, is when that country formally declares the territory as its own — a legal claim, though not always accepted internationally.

In Tibet’s case, China’s army occupied Tibet in 1950, then in 1951 signed the Seventeen Point Agreement under pressure and declared Tibet part of the PRC.
Many observers and Tibetans still describe this as an occupation, since it involved military force and lacked genuine Tibetan consent.

So in short:
